Gospel Lk 16:19-31

Jesus said to the Pharisees:
“There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen
and dined sumptuously each day.
And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores,
who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps
that fell from the rich man's table.
Dogs even used to come and lick his sores.
When the poor man died,
he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham.
The rich man also died and was buried,
and from the netherworld, where he was in torment,
he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off
and Lazarus at his side.
And he cried out, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me.
Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue,
for I am suffering torment in these flames.'
Abraham replied,
‘My child, remember that you received
what was good during your lifetime
while Lazarus likewise received what was bad;
but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented.
Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established
to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go
from our side to yours or from your side to ours.’
He said, ‘Then I beg you, father,
send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers,
so that he may warn them,
lest they too come to this place of torment.'
But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets.
Let them listen to them.’
He said, ‘Oh no, father Abraham,
but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
Then Abraham said, ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets,
neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.’”

MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS,

How often we are distracted from doing what is truly right and important in our lives. Our senses are constantly overloaded with enjoyments provided by this world while our spirituality is buried deep within ourselves. On one level we must consider ourselves very fortunate to live in a time where there is so much prosperity that we have so many opportunities to choose from. Yet, with opportunity comes responsibility. Society creates an illusion of what is important. We then live out this illusion by indulging in what society has to offer. Present satisfaction becomes important while the future is reserved for obtaining more. It must be understood that what is described is not God’s Creation but our own.

Jesus reminds us that Creation is not just about us individually. As Christians we have a responsibility to lift those up around us who are less fortunate. Yes, we are all suffering to some extent but there is always someone who is suffering more. Because of the illusion that we have created by ignoring our spirituality, we tend to make our personal challenges the most important thing in our lives. We convince ourselves that there is just not enough time to help others who are facing their own calamities. The result of these actions is that there are so many people, including us, who are suffering alone. There are many repercussions to this. Alone we suffer and alone we celebrate our successes. Loneliness is a weapon of Satan and is divisive while a life with Jesus Christ is a uniting force.

There are many tools that Satan uses to separate ourselves from Jesus Christ. A very effective one is distraction. Oftentimes, when we know what we should be doing, we find ourselves doing something else to satisfy our inner cravings. It takes one small suggestion to enter our brain for us to divert ourselves from what is truly important. Our focus is blurred when tempted by a more pleasing choice that immediately gratifies our carnal desires. We then enjoy the moment only to find ourselves empty afterwards and overcome with regret. We then perpetuate a cycle of overstimulation by repeating this pattern of behavior. It is Satan’s intent to use this cycle to pull us away from Jesus Christ and into misery. We are warned by Jesus in the Gospel Reading today that this state of misery might not be realized until it is too late.

To combat this danger we must exercise our spirituality. The spiritual fruits of a life with Jesus Christ have the capability of offering so much more than anything from this physical world. We must act out our faith-life, binding with the physical so that the joy of living the way Christ intended it can be experienced. With that we can fully understand what Jesus wants us to do. There is so much joy in living a life together in community. We cannot separate ourselves from each other in pursuit of earthly desires. We must remember that here, on this earth, is not the end but only the beginning. Jesus Christ reminds us of the Corporal Works of Mercy and the Spiritual ones:

Feed the Hungry

Give Drink to the Thirsty

Clothe the Naked

Tend to the Sick

Visit the Incarcerated

Give Alms to the Poor

Bury the Dead

Counsel the Doubtful

Instruct the Ignorant

Admonish the Sinner

Comfort the Sorrowful

Forgiving Injuries

Bearing Wrongs Patiently

Praying for the Living and the Dead

It is through all of these that we enjoy life as God intended.

Evangelio Lc 16: 19-31
Jesús dijo a los fariseos:
"Había un hombre rico que se vestía de púrpura y lino fino
y cenamos cada día banquete con esplendidez.
Y postrado a su puerta era un hombre pobre llamado Lázaro, cubierto de llagas,
que con gusto habría comido hasta saciarse de las migajas
que caían de la mesa del rico.
Perros incluso utilizan para venían y le lamían las llagas.
Cuando murió el pobre,
fue llevado por los ángeles al seno de Abraham.
El rico también murió y fue enterrado,
y desde el mundo inferior, donde se encontraba en el tormento,
levantó los ojos y vio de lejos a Abraham
y Lázaro en su seno.
Y clamó: "Padre Abraham, ten piedad de mí.
Envía a Lázaro para que moje la punta de su dedo en agua y refresque mi lengua;
porque yo estoy sufriendo tormento en estas llamas. "
Abraham le dijo:
"Mi Hijo, recuerda que recibiste
lo que era bueno durante su vida
y Lázaro asimismo lo que era malo;
pero ahora éste es consolado aquí, mientras tú atormentado.
Por otra parte, entre nosotros y vosotros se establece una gran sima
para evitar que alguien cruce que podrían desear ir
desde nuestro lado de la tuya o la de su lado a la nuestra. '
El dijo: "Entonces te ruego, padre,
enviarlo a la casa de mi padre, porque tengo cinco hermanos,
de modo que él los prevenga,
no sea que ellos también vienen a este lugar de tormento '.
Pero Abraham le dijo: A Moisés ya los profetas.
Que les hagan caso a ellos. '
El dijo, 'Oh no, padre Abraham,
pero si alguien de entre los muertos va a ellos, se arrepentirán ".
Entonces Abraham le dijo: Si no oyen a Moisés ya los profetas,
tampoco se persuadirán aunque resucite de entre los muertos ' ".


MIS HERMANOS Y HERMANAS,

¿Con qué frecuencia nos distrae de hacer lo que es verdaderamente correcto e importante en nuestras vidas. Nuestros sentidos están constantemente sobrecargados con los placeres que ofrece este mundo, mientras que nuestra espiritualidad está enterrado profundamente dentro de nosotros mismos. En un nivel, hay que consideramos muy afortunados de vivir en una época donde hay tanta prosperidad que tenemos tantas oportunidades para elegir. Sin embargo, con la oportunidad viene la responsabilidad. La sociedad crea una ilusión de lo que es importante. entonces vivimos esta ilusión por caer en lo que la sociedad tiene que ofrecer. la satisfacción presente se convierte en importante, mientras que el futuro está reservado para la obtención de más. Se debe entender que lo que se describe no es la creación de Dios, sino nuestra propia.

Jesús nos recuerda que la creación no se trata sólo de nosotros individualmente. Como cristianos tenemos la responsabilidad de levantar a los que van a nuestro alrededor que son menos afortunados. Sí, todos estamos sufriendo en cierta medida, pero siempre hay alguien que está sufriendo más. Debido a la ilusión que hemos creado haciendo caso omiso de nuestra espiritualidad, que tienden a hacer que nuestros retos personales que lo más importante en nuestras vidas. Nos convencemos de que no hay suficiente tiempo para ayudar a otros que se enfrentan a sus propias calamidades. El resultado de estas acciones es que hay tanta gente, incluidos nosotros, que están sufriendo a solas. Hay muchas repercusiones en el presente. Sufrimos solos y solas celebramos nuestros éxitos. La soledad es un arma de Satanás y es divisivo, mientras que una vida con Jesucristo es una fuerza unificadora.

Hay muchas herramientas que Satanás usa para separarnos de Jesucristo. Uno muy eficaz es la distracción. A menudo, cuando sabemos lo que debemos hacer, nos encontramos haciendo algo más para satisfacer nuestros deseos internos. Toma una pequeña sugerencia para entrar en nuestro cerebro nos desviamos a nosotros mismos de lo que es verdaderamente importante. Nuestro enfoque es borrosa cuando fue tentado por una opción más agradable que satisface inmediatamente nuestros deseos carnales. A continuación, disfrutar el momento sólo para encontrarnos vacío después y superar con pesar. A continuación, perpetuando un ciclo de sobreestimulación repitiendo este patrón de comportamiento. Es la intención de Satanás para utilizar este ciclo de alejarnos de Jesucristo y en la miseria. Somos advertidos por Jesús en el Evangelio de hoy que este estado de miseria no podría realizarse hasta que es demasiado tarde.

Para combatir este peligro debemos ejercer nuestra espiritualidad. Los frutos espirituales de una vida con Jesucristo tienen la capacidad de ofrecer mucho más que cualquier cosa de este mundo físico. Debemos actuar nuestra vida de fe, de unión con la física para que la alegría de vivir de la manera que Cristo quería que se puede experimentar. Con esto podemos entender completamente lo que Jesús quiere que hagamos. Hay tanta alegría en vivir una vida en comunidad. No podemos separarnos unos de otros en la búsqueda de los deseos mundanos. Debemos recordar que aquí, en esta tierra, no es el fin, sino sólo el principio. Jesucristo nos recuerda a las obras de misericordia corporales y las espirituales:

Alimenta al hambriento
Dar de beber al sediento
Vestir al desnudo
Atienden a los enfermos
Visita la Incarcerated
Dar limosna a los pobres
Enterrar a los muertos

Consejo al que lo
Instruir a los ignorantes
Amonestar al pecador
Comfort la Dolorosa
Las lesiones Perdonar
Sufrir con paciencia
La oración por los vivos y los muertos

Es a través de todo esto que nos gusta la vida como Dios manda.

Gospel Lk 14:25-33

Great crowds were traveling with Jesus,
and he turned and addressed them,
“If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother,
wife and children, brothers and sisters,
and even his own life,
he cannot be my disciple.
Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me
cannot be my disciple.
Which of you wishing to construct a tower
does not first sit down and calculate the cost
to see if there is enough for its completion?
Otherwise, after laying the foundation
and finding himself unable to finish the work
the onlookers should laugh at him and say,
‘This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.’
Or what king marching into battle would not first sit down
and decide whether with ten thousand troops
he can successfully oppose another king
advancing upon him with twenty thousand troops?
But if not, while he is still far away,
he will send a delegation to ask for peace terms.
In the same way,
anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions
cannot be my disciple.”

MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS,

 In the Gospel Reading today Jesus issues us a challenge. Just how important is our relationship to Him in comparison to all the other relationships we have in our lives? The focus isn’t on the many friendships that we may formulate during our lifetime, but the closest and dearest relationships that influence us the most: our family. We are offered a stark choice. Are we to make Jesus Christ the central figure in our lives or are we lift up our friends and family above Him while reducing Him to a secondary role? Jesus tells us that this is impossible. If we are to live our lives truly through, in, and with Jesus Christ then we must commit ourselves completely to Him.

In reality, this is a very challenging task and it takes an abundance of faith to achieve it. Right now, this very moment, how far are we willing to go to live out our faith-life and defend it? I myself can say with confidence that many of us would fail when put to this test. It is a most difficult challenge but one that must be presented to us in order to reveal just how important our Christian Faith must be. Jesus tells us that there can be no compromise. If indeed we believe as Christians that Jesus Christ is the Son of God then we must act accordingly. What conflict we face, whatever decision we are presented with, it must be approached within the aspect of our relationship with Jesus. This in itself is a cross which we are commanded to bear. Just looks at us individually and says, “If you believe in me than you must conduct yourself as if you do.” We cannot compromise. We cannot set Jesus aside and only engage Him when we want to. The relationship must be a continuous effort which will then produce positive results.

Throughout our lives we struggle with our free will. So many times we make decisions that actually make our lives more difficult yet we refuse to recognize the pattern and continue forward convincing ourselves that we know better. Our brains are cluttered with illusions of grandeur and success. These plans are usually focused around material objects and pleasures. Jesus again challenges us to dismiss all of this in favor of Him. On the surface, this appears to be a tremendous gamble to take: Is it easier to focus on physical pleasures than to embrace the spiritual? Yes indeed it is. This is another cross that Jesus tells us that we must bear in order to follow Him. There is no compromise in this area.

The Book of Wisdom tells us that,

 “For the corruptible body burdens the soul
and the earthen shelter weighs down the mind that has many concerns.
And scarce do we guess the things on earth,
and what is within our grasp we find with difficulty;”

This serves as a warning to us all. We are all at a disadvantage regarding our faith because we are so intently focused on the material. So much of our time and energy is focused on the materialism of the world in comparison to our spirituality. Jesus tells us to throw all these distractions away and focus completely on Him. To achieve joy and happiness in this life and beyond, this is a necessity. So we are confronted with a stark choice: listen to Jesus Christ the Son of God or listen to ourselves.

Evangelio Lc 14: 25-33
Grandes multitudes iban con Jesús,
y se dio la vuelta y se dirigió a ellos,
"Si alguno viene a mí y no odia a su padre y madre,
esposa e hijos, hermanos y hermanas,
e incluso su propia vida,
no puede ser mi discípulo.
El que no carga su cruz y me sigue
no puede ser mi discípulo.
¿Cuál de ustedes que deseen construir una torre
no se sienta primero a calcular el costo
para ver si hay suficiente para su realización?
De lo contrario, después del establecimiento de las bases
y la búsqueda de sí mismo, no pudiendo terminar el trabajo
los espectadores deben reírse de él y decir,
'Éste comenzó a construir, pero no tienen los recursos para terminar.'
¿O qué rey que marcha a la batalla no se sienta primero
y decidir si con diez mil soldados
él puede oponerse con éxito a otro rey
avanzando sobre él con veinte mil?
Pero si no es así, mientras que él está todavía lejos,
que enviará una delegación para pedir condiciones de paz.
Del mismo modo,
Alguien de ustedes que no renuncie a todos sus bienes
no puede ser mi discípulo ".





MIS HERMANOS Y HERMANAS,

 En la lectura del Evangelio de hoy Jesús nos lanza un desafío. ¿Qué tan importante es nuestra relación con Él en comparación con todas las otras relaciones que tenemos en nuestras vidas? El foco no está en las muchas amistades que podemos formular durante nuestra vida, pero las relaciones más cercanas y queridas que nos influyen más: nuestra familia. Se nos ofrece una elección difícil. Vamos a hacer con Jesucristo, la figura central en nuestra vida o nos elevamos nuestros amigos y familia por encima de él, mientras que reducirlo a un papel secundario? Jesús nos dice que esto es imposible. Si vamos a vivir nuestras vidas de verdad a través de, en, y con Jesucristo, entonces debemos comprometernos por completo a Él.

En realidad, esta es una tarea muy difícil y se necesita una gran cantidad de fe para lograrlo. Ahora mismo, en este mismo momento, hasta qué punto estamos dispuestos a ir a vivir nuestra vida de fe y defenderla? Yo mismo puedo decir con confianza que muchos de nosotros nos fallará cuando se ponen a esta prueba. Es un reto más difícil, pero uno que debe ser presentado a nosotros con el fin de revelar lo importante que debe ser nuestra fe cristiana. Jesús nos dice que no puede haber ningún compromiso. Si, efectivamente, creemos como cristianos que Jesucristo es el Hijo de Dios, entonces debemos actuar en consecuencia. Lo que nos enfrentamos a un conflicto, sea cual sea la decisión que se nos presenta, debe ser abordado en el aspecto de nuestra relación con Jesús. Esto en sí mismo es una cruz que se nos manda a soportar. Sólo mira a nosotros en forma individual y le dice: "Si usted cree en mí que debe conducirse como si lo hace." No podemos hacer concesiones. No podemos establecer a Jesús aparte y sólo dialogar con él cuando queremos. La relación debe ser un esfuerzo continuo que a su vez producen resultados positivos.

A lo largo de nuestras vidas luchamos con nuestro libre albedrío. Así que muchas veces tomamos decisiones que realmente nos hacen la vida más difícil aún que se niegan a reconocer el patrón y seguir adelante convencernos de que sabemos más. Nuestro cerebro está lleno de delirios de grandeza y éxito. Estos planes se centran generalmente alrededor de los objetos materiales y los placeres. Otra vez Jesús nos desafía a despedir a todo esto a favor de él. En la superficie, esto parece ser una apuesta tremenda tomar: ¿Es más fácil concentrarse en los placeres físicos que a abrazar el espiritual? Sí, por supuesto que es. Esta es otra cruz que Jesús nos dice que hay que tener con el fin de seguirle. No hay compromiso en esta área.

El libro de la Sabiduría nos dice que,

 "Para que el cuerpo corruptible agobia el alma
y el refugio de tierra pesa sobre la mente que tiene muchas preocupaciones.
Y escaso hacer que supongo que las cosas en la tierra,
y lo que está a nuestro alcance nos encontramos con dificultades; "

Esto sirve como una advertencia para todos nosotros. Todos estamos en desventaja con respecto a nuestra fe porque estamos tan enfocados intensamente en el material. Gran parte de nuestro tiempo y energía se centra en el materialismo del mundo en comparación con nuestra espiritualidad. Jesús nos dice que tiramos todas estas distracciones de distancia y concentrarse completamente en Él. Para lograr la alegría y la felicidad en esta vida y más allá, esto es una necesidad. Así que nos enfrentamos a una dura elección: escuchar a Jesucristo, el Hijo de Dios o escuchar a nosotros mismos.
