Gospel Mt 25:14-30

Jesus told his disciples this parable:
"A man going on a journey
called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them.
To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one--
to each according to his ability.
Then he went away.
Immediately the one who received five talents went and traded with them,
and made another five.
Likewise, the one who received two made another two.
But the man who received one went off and dug a hole in the ground
and buried his master's money.

After a long time
the master of those servants came back
and settled accounts with them.
The one who had received five talents came forward
bringing the additional five.
He said, 'Master, you gave me five talents.
See, I have made five more.'
His master said to him, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant.
Since you were faithful in small matters,
I will give you great responsibilities.
Come, share your master's joy.'
Then the one who had received two talents also came forward and said,
'Master, you gave me two talents.
See, I have made two more.'
His master said to him, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant.
Since you were faithful in small matters,
I will give you great responsibilities.
Come, share your master's joy.'
Then the one who had received the one talent came forward and said,
'Master, I knew you were a demanding person,
harvesting where you did not plant
and gathering where you did not scatter;
so out of fear I went off and buried your talent in the ground.
Here it is back.'
His master said to him in reply, 'You wicked, lazy servant!
So you knew that I harvest where I did not plant
and gather where I did not scatter?
Should you not then have put my money in the bank
so that I could have got it back with interest on my return?
Now then! Take the talent from him and give it to the one with ten.
For to everyone who has,
more will be given and he will grow rich;
but from the one who has not,
even what he has will be taken away.
And throw this useless servant into the darkness outside,
where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.'"

My Brothers and Sisters,

What a precious gift we all have been given by Our Lord Jesus Christ. As Christians, we are challenged to recognize just how valuable it is. The Word of God is a treasure to be cherished, protected, and treated as our most precious commodity. Sacred Scripture is a love story between us and God. It begins with our creation and reaches its full revelation through the Incarnation of Jesus Christ: The Word becoming flesh. Undeservedly we have been given it all so that we may enter into a deeper, more meaningful relationship with God Our Father through Jesus Christ. With that being the case, we are then asked a simple question: “What are we going to do with the priceless treasure which has been entrusted to us?

In the world today there are so many distractions and pressures which we all face. Usually this leads to anxiety and a great dissatisfaction with our present condition and where we want to be. We tend to raise the bar high regarding material possessions, status, and relationships which affect us emotionally. Wherever we find ourselves, it never seems to be enough. The allures of what could be or what could have been overwhelm us. The constant bombardment of advertisements and pictures of happiness linked to materialism does not help our condition. It actually belittles us into a feeling of despair. It is ironic that this happens even when we are already in possession of the greatest treasures that man has ever known: Salvation and Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Putting Jesus Christ first in our lives ensures a solid foundation from where we can start to build. What He has to offer serves as instruction to a life centered in Him. With Him, we are already lifted to the highest of heights on His shoulders. The heavy construction and lifting is already done. He did all the design and preliminary construction that makes it simpler to continue what He has already started. Yes, there is still much more hard work to be done but the vision of what is and could be in the future is evident. We just need to follow what is laid out before us.

It must be remembered that builders never build alone. There is wisdom in builders working together towards a common goal. Camaraderie develops between all who are involved in the building process. Everyone becomes invested in the project, finding support and friendship through it. It is a shared experience with one goal in mind. This is what our relationship with Jesus Christ is like. He is the foreman. We are the builders. Our individual foundation becomes a part of the overall project with many foundations and many building that in turn develop into a city: A City of God. What we might have thought to be a single structure in actuality is endless in size and scope just like the Love of God.

This is what we can gain from the Parable of the Tenants. What Jesus has to offer us is boundless wisdom and limitless love that will bring us close to Him and into a relationship filled with fulfillment and joy. We are then asked to invite others into this relationship and join together on a journey which will lead us all to eternal life and indescribable joy. Nothing will ever compare with that experience. To experience it alone is like not experiencing it at all. We are all in this together and it is only through togetherness that a full experience will be achieved. Through one the message will be spread to many and the many will then do the same to others.

Paul’s words to the Thessalonians serve as a warning to us as Christians who are already in possession of this treasure:

“But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness,
for that day to overtake you like a thief.
For all of you are children of the light
and children of the day.
We are not of the night or of darkness.
Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do,
but let us stay alert and sober.”

We know what we have. We now have to treat it with the importance that it demands. We cannot hide it. We cannot bury it. We cannot keep it to ourselves. It is meant to be enjoyed and given away. It is through this act of giving that we prevent ourselves from becoming lazy and falling asleep. This is part of the higher awareness that we will achieve through Jesus Christ. We are exposed through to the truth and everything else fades away in comparison to it. It is through this truth that we then can not only build but live within the Kingdom of God.

1 Tes 5, 1-6

Hermanos: Por lo que se refiere al tiempo y a las circunstancias de la venida del Señor, no necesitan que les escribamos nada, puesto que ustedes saben perfectamente que el día del Señor llegará como un ladrón en la noche. Cuando la gente esté diciendo: "¡Qué paz y qué seguridad tenemos!", de repente vendrá sobre ellos la catástrofe, como de repente le vienen a la mujer encinta los dolores del parto, y no podrán escapar.

Pero a ustedes, hermanos, ese día no los tomará por sorpresa, como un ladrón, porque ustedes no viven en tinieblas, sino que son hijos de la luz y del día, no de la noche y las tinieblas.

Por lo tanto, no vivamos dormidos, como los malos; antes bien, mantengámonos despiertos y vivamos sobriamente.

Mt 25, 14-30

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos esta parábola: "El Reino de los cielos se parece también a un hombre que iba a salir de viaje a tierras lejanas; llamó a sus servidores de confianza y les encargó sus bienes. A uno le dio cinco talentos; a otro, dos; y a un tercero, uno, según la capacidad de cada uno, y luego se fue.

El que recibió cinco talentos fue enseguida a negociar con ellos y ganó otros cinco. El que recibió dos hizo lo mismo y ganó otros dos. En cambio, el que recibió un talento hizo un hoyo en la tierra y allí escondió el dinero de su señor.

Después de mucho tiempo regresó aquel hombre y llamó a cuentas a sus servidores.

Se acercó el que había recibido cinco talentos y le presentó otros cinco, diciendo: 'Señor, cinco talentos me dejaste; aquí tienes otros cinco, que con ellos he ganado'. Su señor le dijo: 'Te felicito, siervo bueno y fiel. Puesto que has sido fiel en cosas de poco valor, te confiaré cosas de mucho valor. Entra a tomar parte en la alegría de tu señor'.

Se acercó luego el que había recibido dos talentos y le dijo: 'Señor, dos talentos me dejaste; aquí tienes otros dos, que con ellos he ganado'. Su señor le dijo: 'Te felicito, siervo bueno y fiel. Puesto que has sido fiel en cosas de poco valor, te confiaré cosas de mucho valor. Entra a tomar parte en la alegría de tu señor'.

Finalmente, se acercó el que había recibido un talento y le dijo: 'Señor, yo sabía que eres un hombre duro, que quieres cosechar lo que no has plantado y recoger lo que no has sembrado. Por eso tuve miedo y fui a esconder tu talento bajo tierra. Aquí tienes lo tuyo'.

El señor le respondió: 'Siervo malo y perezoso. Sabías que cosecho lo que no he plantado y recojo lo que no he sembrado. ¿Por qué, entonces, no pusiste mi dinero en el banco, para que a mi regreso lo recibiera yo con intereses? Quítenle el talento y dénselo al que tiene diez. Pues al que tiene se le dará y le sobrará; pero al que tiene poco, se le quitará aun eso poco que tiene.

Y a este hombre inútil, échenlo fuera, a las tinieblas. Allí será el llanto y la desesperación' ".

Mis hermanos y hermanas,

Cuán precioso regalo nos ha dado nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Como cristianos, tenemos el desafío de reconocer cuán valioso es. La Palabra de Dios es un tesoro que debe ser apreciado, protegido y tratado como nuestro bien más preciado. La Sagrada Escritura es una historia de amor entre nosotros y Dios. Comienza con nuestra creación y alcanza su plena revelación a través de la Encarnación de Jesucristo: la Palabra encarnándose. Inmerecidamente se nos ha dado todo para que podamos entrar en una relación más profunda y significativa con Dios, nuestro Padre a través de Jesucristo. Siendo ese el caso, nos hacen una simple pregunta: "¿Qué vamos a hacer con el tesoro inestimable que nos ha sido confiado?

En el mundo de hoy hay tantas distracciones y presiones que todos enfrentamos. Por lo general, esto genera ansiedad y una gran insatisfacción con nuestra condición actual y donde queremos estar. Tendemos a elevar el listón alto con respecto a las posesiones materiales, el estado y las relaciones que nos afectan emocionalmente. Dondequiera que nos encontremos, nunca parece ser suficiente. El aluvión de lo que podría ser o lo que podría haber sido abrumador. El constante bombardeo de anuncios y fotos de felicidad relacionadas con el materialismo no ayuda a nuestra condición. En realidad, nos menosprecia en una sensación de desesperación. Es irónico que esto suceda incluso cuando ya estamos en posesión de los mayores tesoros que el hombre haya conocido: la Salvación y Nuestro Señor Jesucristo.

Poner a Jesucristo en primer lugar en nuestras vidas asegura una base sólida desde donde podemos comenzar a construir. Lo que Él tiene para ofrecer sirve como instrucción para una vida centrada en él. Con Él, ya estamos elevados a las alturas más altas sobre Sus hombros. La construcción pesada y el levantamiento ya están hechos. Hizo todo el diseño y la construcción preliminar que hace que sea más simple continuar lo que ya ha comenzado. Sí, todavía hay mucho más trabajo por hacer, pero la visión de lo que es y podría ser en el futuro es evidente. Solo tenemos que seguir lo que se presenta ante nosotros.

Debe recordarse que los constructores nunca construyen solos. Hay sabiduría en los constructores que trabajan juntos hacia un objetivo común. Camaradería se desarrolla entre todos los que están involucrados en el proceso de construcción. Todos se invierten en el proyecto, encontrando apoyo y amistad a través de él. Es una experiencia compartida con un objetivo en mente. Así es nuestra relación con Jesucristo. Él es el capataz. Somos los constructores Nuestra base individual se convierte en una parte del proyecto general con muchas fundaciones y muchos edificios que a su vez se convierten en una ciudad: una ciudad de Dios. Lo que podríamos haber pensado como una estructura única en realidad es interminable en tamaño y alcance al igual que el Amor de Dios.

Esto es lo que podemos obtener de la parábola de los inquilinos. Lo que Jesús tiene para ofrecernos es sabiduría ilimitada y amor ilimitado que nos acercará a Él y nos llevará a una relación llena de satisfacción y alegría. Luego se nos pide que invitemos a otros a esta relación y nos unamos en un viaje que nos llevará a la vida eterna y la alegría indescriptible. Nada se comparará jamás con esa experiencia. Experimentarlo solo es como no experimentarlo en absoluto. Todos estamos juntos en esto y solo a través de la unión se logrará una experiencia completa. A través de uno, el mensaje se extenderá a muchos y muchos harán lo mismo con los demás.

Las palabras de Pablo a los Tesalonicenses sirven como una advertencia para nosotros como cristianos que ya están en posesión de este tesoro:
"Pero ustedes, hermanos y hermanas, no están en la oscuridad,
para que ese día te alcance como un ladrón.
Para todos ustedes son hijos de la luz
e hijos del día.
No somos de la noche o de la oscuridad.
Por lo tanto, no durmamos como lo hacen los demás,
pero mantengamos alerta y sobrio ".

Sabemos lo que tenemos Ahora debemos tratarlo con la importancia que exige. No podemos ocultarlo. No podemos enterrarlo. No podemos quedárnoslo a nosotros mismos. Está destinado a ser disfrutado y regalado. Es a través de este acto de dar que evitamos que nos volvamos perezosos y nos durmamos. Esto es parte de una mayor conciencia que lograremos a través de Jesucristo. Estamos expuestos a la verdad y todo lo demás se desvanece en comparación con ella. Es a través de esta verdad que no solo podemos construir sino vivir dentro del Reino de Dios.

and whoever for her sake keeps vigil

Indeed, we tell you this, on the word of the Lord,
that we who are alive,
who are left until the coming of the Lord,
will surely not precede those who have fallen asleep.

will be caught up together with them in the clouds

who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
Five of them were foolish and five were wise.
The foolish ones, when taking their lamps,
brought no oil with them,
but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps.
Since the bridegroom was long delayed,
they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
At midnight, there was a cry,
'Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!'
Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps.
The foolish ones said to the wise,
'Give us some of your oil,
for our lamps are going out.'
But the wise ones replied,
'No, for there may not be enough for us and you.
Go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.'
While they went off to buy it,
the bridegroom came
and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him.
Then the door was locked.
Afterwards the other virgins came and said,
'Lord, Lord, open the door for us!'
But he said in reply,
'Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.'
Therefore, stay awake,
for you know neither the day nor the hour."

My Brothers and Sisters,

Jesus Christ is the font of all wisdom. We learn this from Sacred Scripture, especially when the Gospel of John proclaimed from its beginning, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. With that understanding, we as Christians are encouraged to interpret any passage mentioning wisdom to relate it directly to Jesus Christ. In the First Reading today, we can then take encouragement in the knowledge that when we focus our lives around Jesus Christ, we are all the more open to receive Him and a higher awareness of God’s Creation around us. Things will be revealed to those who seek the Lord and remain hidden to those who do not. These things revealed all lead to the truth which centers on Jesus.

A life without Jesus is a life without wisdom. What is experienced is only a small percentage of what is promised through Jesus. We need to invite Him in so as to live our lives the way that God intended: with full joy and full understanding. I feel that we all can reflect on our most important relationships that we have had and continue to have today. Are these the relationships the same as they were when they were first formed? Of course not. The same can be said about our relationship with Jesus Christ. The more time we spend on getting to know Jesus the more we will come to understand Him and how He can affect everything we say and do. The closer we get to Jesus Christ the more we will be able to experience His love and the wisdom that He has to offer. Life is a journey and a life with Jesus Christ makes it all the more fulfilling because He was the one that gave us this life. To know the Son is to know the Father through the Holy Spirit which binds us and Him together.

The Gospel Reading today gives us a celebratory picture of a relationship with Jesus Christ. There is joy in the present while there is joy also in expectation of the future when Jesus Christ will come again in all of His glory bringing with Him a New Heaven and a New Earth. All of His enemies will be put beneath His feet and a joyous celebration will ensue. We are reminded that our lives should be formulated around what is now and what is yet to come. Are we to be foolish with the knowledge that we have obtained through our relationship with Him or are we to utilize it prudently and with wisdom? If we concentrate on the present with that same love He has for us while acknowledging what our true destination is going to be as Christians, then there should be no dread of the future or unexpected surprises that will catch us off guard. As Jesus said in the Gospels, “I remain in you and you remain in me.” Understanding that state of being will enable us to be the best version of ourselves all the while we are being shaped by the one who loves us the most.

We have been warned and counseled. We cannot be taken off guard but what is happening now and what lies for us in the future. An awareness and understanding of our relationship with Jesus Christ leads to less anxiety for what has yet to be revealed and what we are experiencing now.

y ella se deja encontrar por quienes la buscan
y se anticipa a darse a conocer a los que la desean.

El que madruga por ella no se fatigará,
porque la hallará sentada a su puerta.
Darle la primacía en los pensamientos
es prudencia consumada;
quien por ella se desvela
pronto se verá libre de preocupaciones.

A los que son dignos de ella,
ella misma sale a buscarlos por los caminos;
se les aparece benévola
y colabora con ellos en todos sus proyectos.

1 Tes 4, 13-18

Hermanos: No queremos que ignoren lo que pasa con los difuntos, para que no vivan tristes, como los que no tienen esperanza. Pues, si creemos que Jesús murió y resucitó, de igual manera debemos creer que, a los que murieron en Jesús, Dios los llevará con él.

Lo que les decimos, como palabra del Señor, es esto: que nosotros, los que quedemos vivos para cuando venga el Señor, no tendremos ninguna ventaja sobre los que ya murieron.

Cuando Dios mande que suenen las trompetas, se oirá la voz de un arcángel y el Señor mismo bajará del cielo. Entonces, los que murieron en Cristo resucitarán primero; después nosotros, los que quedemos vivos, seremos arrebatados, juntamente con ellos entre nubes, por el aire, para ir al encuentro del Señor, y así estaremos siempre con él.

Consuélense, pues, unos a otros con estas palabras.

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos esta parábola: "El Reino de los cielos es semejante a diez jóvenes, que tomando sus lámparas, salieron al encuentro del esposo. Cinco de ellas eran descuidadas y cinco, previsoras. Las descuidadas llevaron sus lámparas, pero no llevaron aceite para llenarlas de nuevo; las previsoras, en cambio, llevaron cada una un frasco de aceite junto con su lámpara. Como el esposo tardaba, les entró sueño a todas y se durmieron.

A medianoche se oyó un grito: '¡Ya viene el esposo! ¡Salgan a su encuentro!' Se levantaron entonces todas aquellas jóvenes y se pusieron a preparar sus lámparas, y las descuidadas dijeron a las previsoras: 'Dennos un poco de su aceite, porque nuestras lámparas se están apagando'. Las previsoras les contestaron: 'No, porque no va a alcanzar para ustedes y para nosotras. Vayan mejor a donde lo venden y cómprenlo'.

Mientras aquéllas iban a comprarlo, llegó el esposo, y las que estaban listas entraron con él al banquete de bodas y se cerró la puerta. Más tarde llegaron las otras jóvenes y dijeron: 'Señor, señor, ábrenos'. Pero él les respondió: 'Yo les aseguro que no las conozco'.

Estén pues, preparados, porque no saben ni el día ni la hora''.

Mis hermanos y hermanas,

Jesucristo es la fuente de toda sabiduría. Aprendemos esto de la Sagrada Escritura, especialmente cuando el Evangelio de Juan proclamó desde el principio: "En el principio era la Palabra, y la Palabra estaba con Dios y la Palabra era Dios. Con ese entendimiento, nosotros, como cristianos, somos animados a interpretar cualquier pasaje que mencione la sabiduría para relacionarla directamente con Jesucristo. En la Primera lectura de hoy, podemos alentarnos sabiendo que cuando enfocamos nuestras vidas en torno a Jesucristo, estamos cada vez más dispuestos a recibirlo y a una mayor conciencia de la creación de Dios que nos rodea. Las cosas serán reveladas a aquellos que buscan al Señor y permanecen ocultos para aquellos que no lo hacen. Estas cosas reveladas conducen a la verdad que se centra en Jesús.

Una vida sin Jesús es una vida sin sabiduría. Lo que se experimenta es solo un pequeño porcentaje de lo que se promete a través de Jesús. Necesitamos invitarlo a Él para que vivamos nuestras vidas de la manera que Dios lo quiso: con plena alegría y plena comprensión. Siento que todos podemos reflexionar sobre nuestras relaciones más importantes que hemos tenido y seguimos teniendo hoy. ¿Son estas las mismas relaciones que cuando fueron formadas? Por supuesto no. Lo mismo puede decirse acerca de nuestra relación con Jesucristo. Mientras más tiempo pasemos en llegar a conocer a Jesús, más podremos entenderlo y cómo él puede afectar todo lo que decimos y hacemos. Cuanto más nos acerquemos a Jesucristo, más podremos experimentar su amor y la sabiduría que Él tiene para ofrecer. La vida es un viaje y una vida con Jesucristo lo hace aún más gratificante porque Él fue quien nos dio esta vida. Conocer al Hijo es conocer al Padre a través del Espíritu Santo que nos une a Él y a Él juntos.

La lectura del Evangelio de hoy nos da una imagen festiva de una relación con Jesucristo. Hay alegría en el presente mientras que hay alegría también en la expectativa del futuro cuando Jesucristo vendrá de nuevo en toda Su gloria trayendo consigo un Cielo Nuevo y una Tierra Nueva. Todos Sus enemigos serán puestos bajo Sus pies y se producirá una feliz celebración. Se nos recuerda que nuestras vidas deberían formularse en torno a lo que es ahora y lo que está por venir. ¿Debemos ser necios con el conocimiento que hemos obtenido a través de nuestra relación con Él o debemos utilizarlo con prudencia y sabiduría? Si nos concentramos en el presente con el mismo amor que Él tiene para nosotros al tiempo que reconocemos cuál será nuestro verdadero destino como cristianos, entonces no debe haber temor al futuro ni sorpresas inesperadas que nos sorprendan. Como Jesús dijo en los Evangelios: "Yo permanezco en ti y tú permaneces en mí". Comprender ese estado del ser nos permitirá ser la mejor versión de nosotros mismos mientras nos modela el que más nos ama.

Hemos sido advertidos y aconsejados. No podemos tomarnos por sorpresa, sino lo que está sucediendo ahora y lo que nos espera en el futuro. El conocimiento y la comprensión de nuestra relación con Jesucristo conduce a una menor ansiedad por lo que aún no se ha revelado y lo que estamos experimentando ahora.
