Brothers and sisters:
I should like you to be free of anxieties.
An unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord,

An unmarried woman or a virgin is anxious about the things of the Lord,
so that she may be holy in both body and spirit.
A married woman, on the other hand,
is anxious about the things of the world,
how she may please her husband.
I am telling you this for your own benefit,
not to impose a restraint upon you,
but for the sake of propriety
and adherence to the Lord without distraction.

Gospel Mk 1:21-28

Then they came to Capernaum,
and on the sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and taught.
The people were astonished at his teaching,
for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.
In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit;
he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
Have you come to destroy us?
I know who you are—the Holy One of God!"
Jesus rebuked him and said,
"Quiet! Come out of him!"
The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him.
All were amazed and asked one another,
"What is this?
A new teaching with authority.
He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him."
His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee.

My Brothers and Sisters,

Throughout the history of the world, God has sent the prophets at different times to help guide the people living during that period. Those same words spoken are contained in our Sacred Scripture and are known as Divine Revelations because what was said is as important now as it was back then. They tell us about God and serve as the foundation of our faith. They provide instruction and comfort to us. It is through these writings that we are able to develop our own relationship with God and receive His wisdom. In our journey of faith, we are then taken to the Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, and the various letters which lead to the full Revelation of Jesus Christ the Son of God. There is no more need of the prophets for we have Jesus Himself through The Living Word and His presence throughout creation. All has been given to us and we are now invited to live the full Christ Experience. Taking the Biblical Writings, the instruction received from the Holy Mother Church, and the Traditions of the Church, we have what is called the Deposit of Faith. As Christians, we have come to understand this as a gift from God to us. It is an expression of His love for us. It serves as a structure of sorts where from within we live out our faith-life with Him. Through it, certain truths are revealed which then allow us to deepen our experiences with Him.

In Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians, he tells us how in many circumstances our social responsibilities can get in the way of our spiritual responsibilities and serve as a distraction to what is of the ultimate importance which is God. Yes, it is through the family and the relationships therein that the Love of God is experienced. With that known, there will be many of us that can find ourselves frustrated and presented with challenges as we try to fulfill many roles to both our families and the Church. This dilemma can also extend into other roles we take on from work and societal obligations. What can easily happen when this occurs is a blurring of the responsibility to God and an obstacle to created between us and our relationship with God. It is easier to ignore something that is unseen such as God and concentrate on our physical existence that is before us. Everything then suffers as a result and nothing is done correctly. Ultimately what then happens is the absence of Joy and the entrance of sin and temptation.

The key to avoiding this dilemma is again focusing on all aspects of the Deposit of Faith and doing everything with Jesus in our hearts, soul, and mind. When we make the effort to do this, we then remove all the obstacles between us and God’s Grace. Obstacles that we constructed in the first place. The eyes of the people of Capernaum were opened in much the same way. They were astounded as Jesus’ teachings in the synagogue. It was through their reception of the Word that the path was cleared for them to experience miracles and demons were cast out. This was in stark contrast to when Jesus went to Nazareth previously and was utterly rejected. No miracles were performed and Jesus was astounded by their lack of faith. 

The stronger our faith becomes the more we become aware of the presence of the Holy Spirit. It is the same with our relationships with people we interact with. The more time we spend with someone, the closer we become. To fully experience God’s Love, we must engage it continuously. There will be less and less anxiety; replaced with all the more joy and love. The path has been mapped out for us and the instructions are offered for us. The challenge is this: are we ready to take the time and effort to use them?

Eso es lo que pidieron al Señor, su Dios, cuando estaban reunidos en el monte Horeb: 'No queremos volver a oír la voz del Señor nuestro Dios, ni volver a ver otra vez ese gran fuego; pues no queremos morir'.

El Señor me respondió: 'Está bien lo que han dicho. Yo haré surgir en medio de sus hermanos un profeta como tú. Pondré mis palabras en su boca y él dirá lo que le mande yo. A quien no escuche las palabras que él pronuncie en mi nombre, yo le pediré cuentas. Pero el profeta que se atreva a decir en mi nombre lo que yo no le haya mandado, o hable en nombre de otros dioses, será reo de muerte' ".

Segunda Lectura

1 Cor 7, 32-35

Hermanos: Yo quisiera que ustedes vivieran sin preocupaciones. El hombre soltero se preocupa de las cosas del Señor y de cómo agradarle; en cambio, el hombre casado se preocupa de las cosas de esta vida y de cómo agradarle a su esposa, y por eso tiene dividido el corazón. En la misma forma, la mujer que ya no tiene marido y la soltera se preocupan de las cosas del Señor y se pueden dedicar a él en cuerpo y alma. Por el contrario, la mujer casada se preocupa de las cosas de esta vida y de cómo agradarle a su esposo.

Les digo todo esto para bien de ustedes. Se lo digo, no para ponerles una trampa, sino para que puedan vivir constantemente y sin distracciones en presencia del Señor, tal como conviene.

Evangelio

Mc 1, 21-28

En aquel tiempo, se hallaba Jesús a Cafarnaúm y el sábado siguiente fue a la sinagoga y se puso a enseñar. Los oyentes quedaron asombrados de sus palabras, pues enseñaba como quien tiene autoridad y no como los escribas.

Había en la sinagoga un hombre poseído por un espíritu inmundo, que se puso a gritar: "¿Qué quieres tú con nosotros, Jesús de Nazaret? ¿Has venido a acabar con nosotros? Ya sé quién eres: el Santo de Dios". Jesús le ordenó: "¡Cállate y sal de él!" El espíritu inmundo, sacudiendo al hombre con violencia y dando un alarido, salió de él. Todos quedaron estupefactos y se preguntaban: "¿Qué es esto? ¿Qué nueva doctrina es ésta? Este hombre tiene autoridad para mandar hasta a los espíritus inmundos y lo obedecen". Y muy pronto se extendió su fama por toda Galilea.

Mis hermanos y hermanas,

A lo largo de la historia del mundo, Dios envió a los profetas en diferentes momentos para ayudar a guiar a las personas que vivieron durante ese período. Esas mismas palabras habladas están contenidas en nuestra Sagrada Escritura y se conocen como Revelaciones Divinas porque lo que se dijo es tan importante ahora como lo era en aquel entonces. Nos hablan de Dios y sirven como el fundamento de nuestra fe. Nos proporcionan instrucción y consuelo. Es a través de estos escritos que podemos desarrollar nuestra propia relación con Dios y recibir su sabiduría. En nuestro camino de fe, nos llevan a los Evangelios, los Hechos de los Apóstoles y las diversas cartas que conducen a la revelación completa de Jesucristo, el Hijo de Dios. No hay más necesidad de los profetas porque tenemos a Jesús mismo a través de La Palabra Viviente y Su presencia a través de la creación. Todo se nos ha dado y ahora estamos invitados a vivir la experiencia completa de Cristo. Tomando los Escritos Bíblicos, la instrucción recibida de la Santa Madre Iglesia y las Tradiciones de la Iglesia, tenemos lo que se llama el Depósito de la Fe. Como cristianos, hemos llegado a entender esto como un regalo de Dios para nosotros. Es una expresión de su amor por nosotros. Sirve como una especie de estructura en la que desde dentro vivimos nuestra vida de fe con él. A través de él, se revelan ciertas verdades que luego nos permiten profundizar nuestras experiencias con él.

En la carta de Pablo a los Corintios, él nos dice cómo en muchas circunstancias nuestras responsabilidades sociales pueden obstaculizar nuestras responsabilidades espirituales y servir como una distracción para lo que es de la máxima importancia que es Dios. Sí, es a través de la familia y las relaciones allí donde se experimenta el Amor de Dios. Con eso conocido, habrá muchos de nosotros que podemos encontrarnos frustrados y enfrentados con desafíos mientras intentamos cumplir muchos roles tanto para nuestras familias como para la Iglesia. Este dilema también puede extenderse a otros roles que asumimos del trabajo y las obligaciones sociales. Lo que puede suceder fácilmente cuando esto ocurre es una confusión de la responsabilidad hacia Dios y un obstáculo creado entre nosotros y nuestra relación con Dios. Es más fácil ignorar algo que no se ve como Dios y concentrarse en nuestra existencia física que tenemos ante nosotros. Todo entonces sufre como resultado y nada se hace correctamente. En última instancia, lo que sucede entonces es la ausencia de Alegría y la entrada del pecado y la tentación.

La clave para evitar este dilema es centrarse de nuevo en todos los aspectos del Depósito de la Fe y hacer todo con Jesús en nuestros corazones, alma y mente. Cuando hacemos el esfuerzo de hacer esto, eliminamos todos los obstáculos entre nosotros y la Gracia de Dios. Obstáculos que construimos en primer lugar. Los ojos de la gente de Capernaum se abrieron de la misma manera. Estaban asombrados como las enseñanzas de Jesús en la sinagoga. Fue a través de su recepción de la Palabra que se despejó el camino para que ellos experimentaran milagros y se expulsara a los demonios. Esto estaba en marcado contraste con cuando Jesús fue a Nazaret anteriormente y fue totalmente rechazado. No se realizaron milagros y Jesús quedó asombrado por su falta de fe.

Cuanto más fuerte se vuelve nuestra fe, más nos damos cuenta de la presencia del Espíritu Santo. Es lo mismo con nuestras relaciones con personas con las que interactuamos. Cuanto más tiempo pasamos con alguien, más nos acercamos. Para experimentar completamente el Amor de Dios, debemos involucrarlo continuamente. Habrá menos y menos ansiedad; reemplazado con más alegría y amor. La ruta se ha trazado para nosotros y las instrucciones se ofrecen para nosotros. El desafío es este: ¿estamos listos para tomar el tiempo y el esfuerzo para usarlos?

The word of the LORD came to Jonah, saying:
"Set out for the great city of Nineveh,
and announce to it the message that I will tell you."
So Jonah made ready and went to Nineveh,
according to the LORD'S bidding.
Now Nineveh was an enormously large city;
it took three days to go through it.
Jonah began his journey through the city,
and had gone but a single day's walk announcing,
"Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed, "
when the people of Nineveh believed God;
they proclaimed a fast
and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth.

When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way,
he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them;
he did not carry it out.

Gospel Mk 1:14-20

After John had been arrested,
Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God:
"This is the time of fulfillment.
The kingdom of God is at hand.
Repent, and believe in the gospel."

As he passed by the Sea of Galilee,
he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea;
they were fishermen.
Jesus said to them,
"Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men."
Then they abandoned their nets and followed him.
He walked along a little farther
and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John.
They too were in a boat mending their nets.
Then he called them.
So they left their father Zebedee in the boat
along with the hired men and followed him.

My Brothers and Sisters,

 We are called by Jesus Christ to abandon our life as we know it and embrace the Christian Way. It is through this act that Jesus then becomes our guide, teacher, and advocate. The world is indeed passing away. It is being changed by those being influenced by the presence of Jesus Christ in their lives and by others choosing to embrace temptation and sin. Through these individual actions society is being shaped and formed. The Kingdom of God is slowly being revealed while, at the same time, the reality of evil is being unmasked. We all constantly stand at a fork in the road, offered constant choices which will lead us in either direction. At first, these choices might seem difficult but, through the exercise of our faith,  the Love of God offers direction.

The readings from Sacred Scripture today act as a warning bell. Creation is not eternal. Our lives within God’s Creation are limited. How we conduct ourselves will affect which road we will take and who we will bring with us. We have been given the gift of free will and are encouraged to use it. With this conduct comes consequences in this life and the next. If we are to truly experience joy and freedom now then we must accept Jesus’ invitation to live with Him and love Him. This love has the power to overcome anything that threatens to overwhelm us if we surrender to it. Without Jesus’ love this life becomes hollow and empty; filled with sorrow and disappointment.

Our conscious is a beautiful thing. It is Jesus working within us. As long as we listen to Him, there is always time to correct our behaviors and make the adjustments necessary to become closer to Him. The past cannot be changed but the future always offers more roads to choose from. Jesus is always walking beside us, pointing the right direction to go in. There will be times when His advice is ignored and we stumble along into dangerous territory but even then He will offer a helping hand or point out a way out of the mess that we created.

Take the example of the prophet Jonah. He was sent to a gentile city, Nineveh, to proclaim its destruction in forty days. This served as a warning to all of those within the city who did not recognize God for who He was and who refused to follow Him. The citizenry repented and God showed mercy. The people of the city did not change their ways out of fear but because their eyes were opened to the realization that the lives they were leading were indeed leading to their destruction. There was a better way and they saw it. Their conscious was their guide and it led them to redemption. We all have that opportunity through Jesus Christ. There is nothing that is too broken that cannot be repaired through the Love of Jesus. He will heal us and correct our actions if only we let Him.

When Jesus called to Simon and Andrew, they too immediately saw a different way through Jesus. They were drawn to Him, abandoned their lives, and followed Him. When we pray, focus on our relationship with Jesus, and live our faith, that same longing because evident within us. It can be described as a sort of surrendering to God’s will and an understanding of what He wants. What God wants is very simple. We are the ones that make it more difficult than it really is. He wants us to love Him. An expression of love is obedience and trust. It is through this obedience and trust that a new life is revealed and our full potential is recognized.

The only struggles that we will encounter when we start walking with Jesus and allow Him to be our guide are the ones we will create ourselves. This will be a continuous struggle as Paul warned us in his Letter to the Romans. He tells us that the flesh is constantly at war with the spirit because they are incompatible. Our flesh is defect because of Original Sin while our spirit is drawn to God. We must heed this warning and not let the flesh overcome the spirit. It is the flesh that will lead us down the wrong road. When we follow the spirit, it will naturally bring us closer to God. And closer to God is where we should want to be.

Jon 3, 1-5. 10

En aquellos días, el Señor volvió a hablar a Jonás y le dijo: "Levántate y vete a Nínive, la gran capital, para anunciar ahí el mensaje que te voy a indicar".

Se levantó Jonás y se fue a Nínive, como le había mandado el Señor. Nínive era una ciudad enorme: hacían falta tres días para recorrerla. Jonás caminó por la ciudad durante un día, pregonando: "Dentro de cuarenta días Nínive será destruida".

Los ninivitas creyeron en Dios, ordenaron un ayuno y se vistieron de sayal, grandes y pequeños. Cuando Dios vio sus obras y cómo se convertían de su mala vida, cambió de parecer y no les mandó el castigo que había determinado imponerles.

1 Cor 7, 29-31

Hermanos: Les quiero decir una cosa: la vida es corta. Por tanto, conviene que los casados vivan como si no lo estuvieran; los que sufren, como si no sufrieran; los que están alegres, como si no se alegraran; los que compran, como si no compraran; los que disfrutan del mundo, como si no disfrutaran de él; porque este mundo que vemos es pasajero.

Evangelio

Mc 1, 14-20

Después de que arrestaron a Juan el Bautista, Jesús se fue a Galilea para predicar el Evangelio de Dios y decía: "Se ha cumplido el tiempo y el Reino de Dios ya está cerca. Arrepiéntanse y crean en el Evangelio".

Caminaba Jesús por la orilla del lago de Galilea, cuando vio a Simón y a su hermano, Andrés, echando las redes en el lago, pues eran pescadores. Jesús les dijo: "Síganme y haré de ustedes pescadores de hombres". Inmediatamente dejaron las redes y lo siguieron.

Un poco más adelante, vio a Santiago y a Juan, hijos de Zebedeo, que estaban en una barca, remendando sus redes. Los llamó, y ellos, dejando en la barca a su padre con los trabajadores, se fueron con Jesús.

Mis hermanos y hermanas,


 Jesucristo nos llama a abandonar nuestra vida tal como la conocemos y abrazar el Camino Cristiano. Es a través de este acto que Jesús se convierte en nuestra guía, maestro y defensor. El mundo de hecho está pasando. Está siendo cambiado por aquellos que están siendo influenciados por la presencia de Jesucristo en sus vidas y por otros que eligen abrazar la tentación y el pecado. A través de estas acciones individuales, la sociedad se está formando y formando. El Reino de Dios se está revelando lentamente mientras, al mismo tiempo, se desenmascara la realidad del mal. Todos nos paramos constantemente en una bifurcación en el camino, ofreciendo opciones constantes que nos llevarán en cualquier dirección. Al principio, estas elecciones pueden parecer difíciles pero, mediante el ejercicio de nuestra fe, el Amor de Dios ofrece dirección.

Las lecturas de la Sagrada Escritura actúan hoy como una campana de advertencia. La creación no es eterna Nuestras vidas dentro de la Creación de Dios son limitadas. Cómo nos conducimos afectará el camino que tomaremos y a quién traeremos con nosotros. Se nos ha otorgado el don del libre albedrío y se nos anima a usarlo. Con esta conducta vienen las consecuencias en esta vida y la próxima. Si realmente queremos experimentar alegría y libertad ahora, entonces debemos aceptar la invitación de Jesús a vivir con Él y amarlo. Este amor tiene el poder de superar todo lo que amenaza con abrumarnos si nos rendimos a él. Sin el amor de Jesús, esta vida se vuelve hueca y vacía; lleno de dolor y decepción.

Nuestra consciencia es una cosa hermosa. Es Jesús trabajando dentro de nosotros. Mientras lo escuchemos, siempre hay tiempo para corregir nuestros comportamientos y hacer los ajustes necesarios para estar más cerca de él. El pasado no se puede cambiar, pero el futuro siempre ofrece más caminos para elegir. Jesús siempre camina a nuestro lado, señalando la dirección correcta para entrar. Habrá momentos en que se ignorará Su consejo y tropezamos con un territorio peligroso, pero incluso entonces Él ofrecerá una mano o señalará una salida del desastre que creamos.

Tome el ejemplo del profeta Jonás. Fue enviado a una ciudad gentil, Nínive, para proclamar su destrucción en cuarenta días. Esto sirvió como una advertencia a todos aquellos dentro de la ciudad que no reconocieron a Dios por lo que él era y que se negaron a seguirlo. La ciudadanía se arrepintió y Dios mostró misericordia. La gente de la ciudad no cambió su camino por miedo, sino porque sus ojos se abrieron a la comprensión de que las vidas que llevaban conducían a su destrucción. Había una mejor manera y lo vieron. Su conciencia era su guía y los llevó a la redención. Todos tenemos esa oportunidad a través de Jesucristo. No hay nada que esté demasiado roto que no pueda repararse a través del Amor de Jesús. Él nos sanará y corregirá nuestras acciones si solo lo dejamos.

Cuando Jesús llamó a Simón y Andrés, ellos también vieron de inmediato un camino diferente a través de Jesús. Fueron atraídos hacia Él, abandonaron sus vidas y lo siguieron. Cuando oramos, concéntrese en nuestra relación con Jesús y viva nuestra fe, ese mismo anhelo porque es evidente dentro de nosotros. Se puede describir como una especie de rendición a la voluntad de Dios y una comprensión de lo que Él quiere. Lo que Dios quiere es muy simple. Somos nosotros los que lo hacemos más difícil de lo que realmente es. Él quiere que lo amemos. Una expresión de amor es obediencia y confianza. Es a través de esta obediencia y confianza que se revela una nueva vida y se reconoce todo nuestro potencial.

Las únicas luchas que encontraremos cuando comencemos a caminar con Jesús y permitamos que sea nuestro guía son las que crearemos nosotros mismos. Esta será una lucha continua como Pablo nos advirtió en su Carta a los Romanos. Él nos dice que la carne está constantemente en guerra con el espíritu porque son incompatibles. Nuestra carne es defectuosa debido al pecado original mientras nuestro espíritu se siente atraído por Dios. Debemos prestar atención a esta advertencia y no dejar que la carne venza al espíritu. Es la carne lo que nos llevará por el camino equivocado. Cuando seguimos el espíritu, naturalmente nos acercará más a Dios. Y más cerca de Dios es donde deberíamos querer estar.
