When someone strikes you on your right cheek,
turn the other one as well.
If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic,
hand over your cloak as well.
Should anyone press you into service for one mile,
go for two miles.
Give to the one who asks of you,
and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow.
“You have heard that it was said,
You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.
But I say to you, love your enemies
and pray for those who persecute you,
that you may be children of your heavenly Father,
for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good,
and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.
For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have?
Do not the tax collectors do the same?
And if you greet your brothers only,
what is unusual about that?
Do not the pagans do the same?
So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS,

 Over the past two weeks the Scripture Readings have challenged us to review our conduct and to hold ourselves to a higher standard than what is expected of us through society and cultural norms. Expected conduct as dictated by society is not enough to live the Christian Life. Its roots are in the material world and all that comes from it is corrupted by us and by the influences of Satan. God reminds us to, “Be holy, for I, the LORD, your God, am holy.” This is a call for us to continuously pursue a relationship with God that is untainted by our own selfish desires, motivations, and opinion that might cloud our judgment and decision-making process. All of our thoughts and actions should be done with God as the most important factor. This keeps us open to a relationship with Him and insures Him a proper place in our lives. When we stay open to Him then we are able to receive the love that He pours forth onto us continuously. When this occurs our will is made secondary to His whereupon there is no room for negative thoughts or actions. His commands become easy to follow and our lives become easier as a result.

A natural reaction to feeling God’s love is for us to express that love to everything and everyone. What can be perceived as at first a series of commands by God in the First Reading today can then be seen as a description of what happens to us when we pursue the goal of holiness that God describes. It will become impossible to bear hatred or a grudge if we are right with God. There will be no room for animosity and the chance of sinning dwindles away. This can also be termed as Walking with God. With God at our side even the temptation to do these things will fade away. To pursue this means that we will never obtain it completely but we will be transformed by the experience and will be able to experience this life and the next as God intended us to. What God says in the First Reading is a universal call to holiness for everyone in His creation. Responding to this call is a requirement for all Christians and should be a central aspect of our faith. When we strive for holiness then we are working with God’s creation and not against it.

Paul stresses that the wisdom of the world is foolish in the eyes of God. As we continue to live out our faith this becomes more evident. All the right answers lie with God while a life without God only offers more questions and no answers. Society is filled with examples of people trying to offer revelation that does not include God. Instead of God the triumph of the human intellect and the human condition are substituted. These then offer only more questions and guesses instead of true wisdom which comes only from God. Concentrating on God offers immediate understanding and simplifies the things that society likes to complicate: Created in His image we were created to love God the same way that He loves us. Through this understanding true joy can be experienced and lived with.

There is no room for animosity and negative emotions in the Kingdom of God on this earth and throughout His vast creation. God did not create anything negative. What is felt negatively and done negatively is a result of us, our choices, and Original Sin. Choosing God above the ways of society and of Satan demands a commitment from us not to act out negatively. We should have no enemies. We should not promote violence and conflict. We have to focus on the good all of the time if we are truly going to espouse the virtues and spread the Love of God. This is definitely a countercultural way of doing things but that is who God is in comparison to society. He is countercultural because He came before society and will be here after society ends. Society is of the physical world and is corrupted by our presence and the presence of Satan. God is pure in comparison. Us focusing on this purity enables a cleansing process to begin that will bring forth the goodness that resides in all of us.

We are given instruction so that we may become closer to God. What is said and written down is entirely for our benefit. The words are guideposts to aid us on our journey. To the left and to the right of the path are negative emotions, actions, and darkness. The better way is on the path that leads to light and right relationship with God. From that place we can discover great things about ourselves and about the one who created. Us

Que nadie se engañe: si alguno de ustedes se tiene a sí mismo por sabio según los criterios de este mundo, que se haga ignorante para llegar a ser verdaderamente sabio. Porque la sabiduría de este mundo es ignorancia ante Dios, como dice la Escritura: Dios hace que los sabios caigan en la trampa de su propia astucia. MIS HERMANOS Y HERMANAS,

 Durante las últimas dos semanas, las Lecturas de las Escrituras nos han retado a revisar nuestra conducta y a mantenernos en un nivel más alto de lo que se espera de nosotros a través de la sociedad y las normas culturales. La conducta esperada según lo dictado por la sociedad no es suficiente para vivir la vida cristiana. Sus raíces están en el mundo material y todo lo que proviene de él está corrompido por nosotros y por las influencias de Satanás. Dios nos recuerda: "Sé santo, porque yo, el Señor, tu Dios, soy santo". Este es un llamado para que busquemos continuamente una relación con Dios que no esté contaminada por nuestros propios deseos, motivaciones y opiniones egoístas que puedan nublar nuestro juicio y el proceso de toma de decisiones. Todos nuestros pensamientos y acciones deben hacerse con Dios como el factor más importante. Esto nos mantiene abiertos a una relación con Él y le asegura un lugar apropiado en nuestras vidas. Cuando nos mantenemos abiertos a Él, podemos recibir el amor que Él nos derrama continuamente. Cuando esto ocurre, nuestra voluntad se hace secundaria a la Suya, con lo cual no hay lugar para pensamientos o acciones negativas. Sus órdenes se vuelven fáciles de seguir y nuestras vidas se vuelven más fáciles como resultado.

Una reacción natural al sentir el amor de Dios es que expresemos ese amor a todo ya todos. Lo que se puede percibir como al principio una serie de mandamientos de Dios en la primera lectura de hoy, puede verse como una descripción de lo que nos sucede cuando perseguimos el objetivo de santidad que Dios describe. Será imposible soportar el odio o el rencor si tenemos razón con Dios. No habrá lugar para la animosidad y la posibilidad de pecar disminuye. Esto también se puede llamar caminar con Dios. Con Dios a nuestro lado, incluso la tentación de hacer estas cosas se desvanecerá. Perseguir esto significa que nunca lo obtendremos por completo, sino que seremos transformados por la experiencia y podremos experimentar esta vida y la próxima como Dios nos lo propuso. Lo que Dios dice en la primera lectura es un llamado universal a la santidad para todos en su creación. Responder a este llamado es un requisito para todos los cristianos y debe ser un aspecto central de nuestra fe. Cuando luchamos por la santidad, estamos trabajando con la creación de Dios y no en contra de ella.

Pablo enfatiza que la sabiduría del mundo es tonta a los ojos de Dios. A medida que continuamos viviendo nuestra fe, esto se vuelve más evidente. Todas las respuestas correctas recaen en Dios, mientras que una vida sin Dios solo ofrece más preguntas y ninguna respuesta. La sociedad está llena de ejemplos de personas que intentan ofrecer revelación que no incluye a Dios. En lugar de Dios, se sustituye el triunfo del intelecto humano y la condición humana. A través de esta comprensión, se puede experimentar y vivir la verdadera alegría.

No hay lugar para la animosidad y las emociones negativas en el Reino de Dios en esta tierra y en toda su vasta creación. Dios no creó nada negativo. Lo que se siente negativamente y se hace negativamente es el resultado de nosotros, nuestras elecciones y el pecado original. Elegir a Dios por encima de los caminos de la sociedad y de Satanás exige un compromiso de nuestra parte para no actuar negativamente. No deberíamos tener enemigos. No debemos promover la violencia y los conflictos. Tenemos que centrarnos en el bien todo el tiempo si realmente vamos a defender las virtudes y difundir el Amor de Dios. Esta es definitivamente una forma contracultural de hacer las cosas, pero es quién es Dios en comparación con la sociedad. Él es contracultural porque vino antes que la sociedad y estará aquí después de que la sociedad termine. La sociedad es del mundo físico y está corrompida por nuestra presencia y la presencia de Satanás. Dios es puro en comparación. Centrarnos en esta pureza permite que comience un proceso de limpieza que produzca la bondad que reside en todos nosotros.

Se nos dan instrucciones para que podamos acercarnos a Dios. Lo que se dice y escribe es para nuestro beneficio. Las palabras son guías para ayudarnos en nuestro viaje. A la izquierda y a la derecha del camino hay emociones negativas, acciones y oscuridad. La mejor manera es en el camino que conduce a la luz y la relación correcta con Dios. but make good to the Lord all that you vow.
But I say to you, do not swear at all;
not by heaven, for it is God’s throne;
nor by the earth, for it is his footstool;
nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.
Do not swear by your head,
for you cannot make a single hair white or black.
Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,' and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’
Anything more is from the evil one.”

MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS,

 The Coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Word Becoming Flesh, represents a moment when the entire Law given to us by God through Moses and the prophets is brought to perfection. Jesus Christ being revealed to all of God’s Creation brings all of it, everything revealed, to an epic climax of revelation never to be matched in all of eternity. The Apostle Paul describes it as a freeing moment to all of creation: the chains of the Law being broken. Because Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s Law means that the Law of God is still present but now serves a newly revealed purpose. The reason for it now is seen through the perspective of  Jesus Christ the Son of God and is defined by who Jesus is as part of the Trinity and who he is in relationship with us.

Just because Jesus Christ freed us from the chains of the Law does not mean that we are not answerable to it. The Law and teachings of Sacred Scripture now serve as instruction and provides a guide on how we are to conduct ourselves as Christians. The more that we follow God’s Teaching the closer we will get to Him; the nearer we will be drawn to Him. It truly is a blueprint on how we are to live and experience our lives. It is through reading and following what Sacred Scripture has to say that we understand more about ourselves and about God. Reading it is a form of prayer that prepares us for a relationship with Him. The words written are meant to be read, contemplated, and meditated on. We who define ourselves as Christians are encouraged to devour them as spiritual nourishment which will then invigorate our spirit, bring us wisdom, and make us whole.

The Scripture Reading from the Book of Sirach tells us that God presents us with a choice in the form of fire and water. The fire destroys us while the water brings us nourishment and life. Obeying God’s Commandments and listening to His instruction is the choice of water while refusing them means accepting the destruction that fire brings in all aspects of our existence. He loves us so much that He gives us a choice to take whatever we choose but warns us beforehand the consequences of exercising our will above His. It is also comforting to know that that, even for us who have selfishly chosen fire above water many times, there is always the fact that water extinguishes the flames if reached for later. With God nothing is beyond repair; even our wretched selves. Whatever place we find ourselves in our life is where we can find God. Reaching out to grab His hand that is constantly being offered to us signifies that water and God’s Way has been chosen above our way.

God is the perfect good thus what is written in Sacred Scripture reflects that which is the perfect good. It is written that, “the eyes of God are on those who fear Him.” This means that as long as we pursue a relationship with Him and respond to His invitation to love Him, we will be protected and will be able to overcome any obstacle that we are presented with. Everything that has happened to us and that will happen takes on a new meaning because these things are finite while God is eternal. Being His children, we are also eternal. That which is not eternal and has its roots in this world cannot overcome us. Building our faith-life on a foundation starting with Sacred Scripture and continuing with prayer insures that we will be walking with God instead of alone.

When we struggle with things that we are tempted with we are encouraged to go back to the basics; letting ourselves be told what to do. This is exactly what is contained in the writings of Sacred Scripture. There is instruction that comes directly from God and from Jesus Christ. There are also stories related to many of those who came before us that were seeking a relationship with God. Through it all we gain wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and above all an enriched relationship with God. To know God is to love God. To be in relationship with God is to experience His love. It is through this that Joy is found and a wonderful experience contained in this life that we have been given and the next that is to come.

Segunda lectura

1 Co 2, 6-10

Hermanos: Es cierto que a los adultos en la fe les predicamos la sabiduría, pero no la sabiduría de este mundo ni la de aquellos que dominan al mundo, los cuales van a quedar aniquilados. Por el contrario, predicamos una sabiduría divina, misteriosa, que ha permanecido oculta y que fue prevista por Dios desde antes de los siglos, para conducirnos a la gloria. Ninguno de los que dominan este mundo la conoció, porque, de haberla conocido, nunca hubieran crucificado al Señor de la gloria.
Pero lo que nosotros predicamos es, como dice la Escritura, que lo que Dios ha preparado para los que lo aman, ni el ojo lo ha visto, ni el oído lo ha escuchado, ni la mente del hombre pudo siquiera haberlo imaginado. A nosotros, en cambio, Dios nos lo ha revelado por el Espíritu que conoce perfectamente todo, hasta lo más profundo de Dios.

Mt 5,17-37

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “No crean que he venido a abolir la ley o los profetas; no he venido a abolirlos, sino a darles plenitud. Yo les aseguro que antes se acabarán el cielo y la tierra, que deje de cumplirse hasta la más pequeña letra o coma de la ley. Por lo tanto, el que quebrante uno de estos preceptos menores y enseñe eso a los hombres, será el menor en el Reino de los cielos; pero el que los cumpla y los enseñe, será grande en el Reino de los cielos. Les aseguro que si su justicia no es mayor que la de los escribas y fariseos, ciertamente no entrarán ustedes en el Reino de los cielos.
Han oído que se dijo a los antiguos: No matarás y el que mate será llevado ante el tribunal. Pero yo les digo: Todo el que se enoje con su hermano, será llevado también ante el tribunal; el que insulte a su hermano, será llevado ante el tribunal supremo, y el que lo desprecie, será llevado al fuego del lugar de castigo.
Por lo tanto, si cuando vas a poner tu ofrenda sobre el altar, te acuerdas allí mismo de que tu hermano tiene alguna queja contra ti, deja tu ofrenda junto al altar y ve primero a reconciliarte con tu hermano, y vuelve luego a presentar tu ofrenda. Arréglate pronto con tu adversario, mientras vas con él por el camino; no sea que te entregue al juez, el juez al policía y te metan a la cárcel. Te aseguro que no saldrás de allí hasta que hayas pagado el último centavo.
También han oído que se dijo a los antiguos: No cometerás adulterio. Pero yo les digo que quien mire con malos deseos a una mujer, ya cometió adulterio con ella en su corazón. Por eso, si tu ojo derecho es para ti ocasión de pecado, arráncatelo y tíralo lejos, porque más te vale perder una parte de tu cuerpo y no que todo él sea arrojado al lugar de castigo. Y si tu mano derecha es para ti ocasión de pecado, córtatela y arrójala lejos de ti, porque más te vale perder una parte de tu cuerpo y no que todo él sea arrojado al lugar de castigo.
También se dijo antes: El que se divorcie, que le dé a su mujer un certificado de divorcio; pero yo les digo que el que se divorcia, salvo el caso de que vivan en unión ilegítima, expone a su mujer al adulterio, y el que se casa con una divorciada comete adulterio.
Han oído que se dijo a los antiguos: No jurarás en falso y le cumplirás al Señor lo que le hayas prometido con juramento. Pero yo les digo: No juren de ninguna manera, ni por el cielo, que es el trono de Dios; ni por la tierra, porque es donde él pone los pies; ni por Jerusalén, que es la ciudad del gran Rey.
Tampoco jures por tu cabeza, porque no puedes hacer blanco o negro uno solo de tus cabellos. Digan simplemente sí, cuando es sí; y no, cuando es no. Lo que se diga de más, viene del maligno’’.

MIS HERMANOS Y HERMANAS,

 La Venida de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, la Palabra que se hace carne, representa un momento en que toda la Ley que Dios nos dio a través de Moisés y los profetas se lleva a la perfección. La revelación de Jesucristo a toda la Creación de Dios lleva todo, todo revelado, a un clímax épico de revelación que nunca se igualará en toda la eternidad. El apóstol Pablo lo describe como un momento liberador para toda la creación: las cadenas de la ley se rompen. Debido a que Jesús es el cumplimiento de la Ley de Dios, significa que la Ley de Dios todavía está presente, pero ahora tiene un propósito recién revelado. La razón de esto ahora se ve a través de la perspectiva de Jesucristo, el Hijo de Dios, y se define por quién es Jesús como parte de la Trinidad y quién es él en relación con nosotros.

El hecho de que Jesucristo nos haya liberado de las cadenas de la Ley no significa que no seamos responsables ante ella. La Ley y las enseñanzas de la Sagrada Escritura ahora sirven como instrucción y proporcionan una guía sobre cómo debemos comportarnos como cristianos. Cuanto más sigamos la Enseñanza de Dios, más nos acercaremos a Él; cuanto más nos acerquemos a Él. Realmente es un plan sobre cómo debemos vivir y experimentar nuestras vidas. Es a través de la lectura y el seguimiento de lo que dice la Sagrada Escritura que entendemos más acerca de nosotros mismos y de Dios. Leerlo es una forma de oración que nos prepara para una relación con Él. Las palabras escritas están destinadas a ser leídas, contempladas y meditadas. Quienes nos definimos como cristianos somos alentados a devorarlos como alimento espiritual que luego vigorizará nuestro espíritu, nos dará sabiduría y nos hará completos.

La lectura de las Escrituras del Libro de Sirach nos dice que Dios nos presenta una opción en forma de fuego y agua. El fuego nos destruye mientras el agua nos trae alimento y vida. Obedecer los mandamientos de Dios y escuchar sus instrucciones es la elección del agua, mientras que rechazarlos significa aceptar la destrucción que el fuego trae en todos los aspectos de nuestra existencia. Él nos ama tanto que nos da la opción de tomar lo que elijamos, pero nos advierte de antemano las consecuencias de ejercer nuestra voluntad por encima de la suya. También es reconfortante saber que, incluso para nosotros que hemos elegido egoístamente el fuego sobre el agua muchas veces, siempre existe el hecho de que el agua extingue las llamas si se alcanza para más adelante. Con Dios nada es irreparable; incluso nuestros miserables. Cualquier lugar donde nos encontremos en nuestra vida es donde podemos encontrar a Dios. Alcanzar para agarrar Su mano que constantemente se nos ofrece significa que el agua y el Camino de Dios han sido elegidos por encima de nuestro camino.

Dios es el bien perfecto, por lo tanto, lo que está escrito en la Sagrada Escritura refleja lo que es el bien perfecto. Está escrito que "los ojos de Dios están sobre los que le temen". Esto significa que mientras busquemos una relación con Él y respondamos a Su invitación para amarlo, estaremos protegidos y podremos superar cualquier obstáculo que se nos presente. Todo lo que nos ha sucedido y sucederá adquiere un nuevo significado porque estas cosas son finitas mientras que Dios es eterno. Siendo Sus hijos, también somos eternos. Lo que no es eterno y tiene sus raíces en este mundo no puede vencernos. Construir nuestra vida de fe sobre una base que comience con la Sagrada Escritura y continúe con la oración asegura que caminaremos con Dios en lugar de estar solos.

Cuando luchamos con las cosas con las que estamos tentados, se nos alienta a volver a lo básico; dejándonos decir qué hacer. Esto es exactamente lo que está contenido en los escritos de la Sagrada Escritura. Hay instrucciones que vienen directamente de Dios y de Jesucristo. También hay historias relacionadas con muchos de los que vinieron antes que nosotros que buscaban una relación con Dios. A través de todo esto, obtenemos sabiduría, conocimiento, comprensión y, sobre todo, una relación enriquecida con Dios. Conocer a Dios es amar a Dios. Estar en relación con Dios es experimentar su amor. Es a través de esto que se encuentra la alegría y una experiencia maravillosa contenida en esta vida que se nos ha dado y la próxima que está por venir.
