He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
Simon Peter said in reply,
"You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
Jesus said to him in reply,
"Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah.
For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.
And so I say to you, you are Peter,
and upon this rock I will build my church,
and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.
Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven;
and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
Then he strictly ordered his disciples
to tell no one that he was the Christ.

MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS

 Who do we say Jesus is? Yes, we do recognize Him as the Son of God. Yes, we do recognize Him as a part of the Holy Trinity where it is through Him that we approach the Father under the love and direction of the Holy Spirit. But there is so much more that we need to focus on. If we do in fact believe these things, how should we as Christians let these statements affect our lives? So often we find ourselves dismissive of Jesus Christ. We worship every Sunday as required and maybe even pray during the day, but is there more that we could do to live out what we believe and profess? I feel the answer is yes and, because of this, the Christian Community has a lot of work to do so as to bring all of us to perfection and to evangelize the faith.

There is a lot of responsibility in being a Christian. It is not only about ourselves but about the entire community and the entirety that is God’s Creation. We are stewards of the earth and are expected to protect it and preserve it with all of its beauty and perfection. We are also stewards of our Fellow Man and are expected to serve as an example to all those we interact with and all of those persons we find under our care. The moment that we recognized Jesus Christ for who He was we surrendered our lives over to Him and what we say and do are no longer our decision alone. Jesus Christ is with us, in us, and is watching over us. There is not one thing that escapes His loving awareness and that is what we have to realize. We are not alone. We are no longer individuals with individual thoughts and needs. Everything should be centered around Jesus Christ and it is through Jesus Christ that our lives will be fulfilled.

God has the capability to lift ourselves up to the highest of heights if only we react to his presence in the proper manner. He has offered us everything if only we are willing to take accept it. That is the beauty of free will: God offers but we do not have to take. In the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, God demonstrates this by taking back what was given to Shebna, the master of the palace, and giving to another because what was expected of him was ignored and not fulfilled. There should be some fear here. Yes, God loves us and wants the best for us but, at the same time, there are certain expectations that He has revealed to us that must be reacted to if we are to live a fulfilling and joyous life. God calls, we are encouraged to accept, and then there will be an abundance of joy. If we refuse, then we risk the chance that we may be lost forever.

Sacred Scripture is filled with the example of successes and failure surrounding the acceptance or rejection of God. God loves us so much that He is constantly inviting us into the relationship of the Trinity but the invitation must be accepted by us and, when it is, there are certain expectations that come with it. We will be subjected to ridicule and pain much the same way Jesus was during His passion. We will be conflicted and filled with doubt, much the same way Jesus was. We will be tempted and diverted. We will be confused and abandoned by our friends. Yet, just as there was the Resurrection after the Passion, we will experience the same thing. As Christian, we are united to Jesus Christ through His Passion and through His Resurrection. Our own Resurrection can be experienced in a spiritual way but there will be some suffering and torment as a result. We will also be placed under scrutiny by  by Jesus. This will be done in a loving way but there will also be some sort of torment as we wrestle with every decision that we make. We are challenged to ask ourselves if what we do and say are bringing us closer or further away from Jesus Christ. There will be confusion and frustration but it will be different than the confusion and frustration that we experienced before. There will be a purpose to it. Jesus will be presenting options to us and, at the same time, showing us the answer. We  have to embrace the answer.

The answer to all of our problems and confusion may be simple but the final decision can be hard. This Free Will of ours is precious. We have enjoyed having it and abusing it at the same time. Jesus asks us if we are truly ready to offer it back to him. There are many before us who have given back while there are also many who have refused to do so. Those who do are united to Jesus Forever. Those who don’t will indeed face consequences.

In the end, where do we want to be?

MIS HERMANOS Y HERMANAS

 ¿A quién decimos que es Jesús? Sí, lo reconocemos como el Hijo de Dios. Sí, lo reconocemos como parte de la Santísima Trinidad donde es a través de Él que nos acercamos al Padre bajo el amor y dirección del Espíritu Santo. Pero hay mucho más en lo que debemos concentrarnos. Si de hecho creemos estas cosas, ¿cómo deberíamos, como cristianos, dejar que estas afirmaciones afecten nuestras vidas? Tan a menudo nos encontramos despreciando a Jesucristo. Adoramos todos los domingos según sea necesario y tal vez oremos durante el día, pero ¿hay más que podamos hacer para vivir lo que creemos y profesamos? Siento que la respuesta es sí y, por ello, la Comunidad Cristiana tiene mucho trabajo por hacer para que todos nos lleguemos a la perfección y para evangelizar la fe.

Hay mucha responsabilidad en ser cristiano. No es sólo sobre nosotros mismos, sino sobre toda la comunidad y la totalidad que es la Creación de Dios. Somos mayordomos de la tierra y se espera que la protejan y la preserven con toda su belleza y perfección. También somos administradores de nuestro Compañero Hombre y se espera que sirvan de ejemplo a todos aquellos con quienes interactuamos y todas aquellas personas que encontramos bajo nuestro cuidado. En el momento en que reconocimos a Jesucristo por lo que era, entregamos nuestras vidas a Él y lo que decimos y hacemos ya no es nuestra decisión. Jesucristo está con nosotros, en nosotros, y nos vela. No hay una cosa que escape de su conciencia amorosa y eso es lo que tenemos que darnos cuenta. No estamos solos. Ya no somos individuos con pensamientos y necesidades individuales. Todo debe estar centrado alrededor de Jesucristo y es a través de Jesucristo que nuestras vidas serán cumplidas.

Dios tiene la capacidad de elevarnos a lo más alto de las alturas si sólo reaccionamos a su presencia de la manera apropiada. Él nos ha ofrecido todo si sólo estamos dispuestos a aceptarlo. Esa es la belleza del libre albedrío: Dios ofrece pero no tenemos que tomar. En el Libro del Profeta Isaías, Dios demuestra esto, devolviendo lo que se le dio a Shebna, el maestro del palacio, y dando a otro porque lo que se esperaba de él fue ignorado y no cumplido. Debe haber algo de miedo aquí. Sí, Dios nos ama y quiere lo mejor para nosotros, pero al mismo tiempo, hay ciertas expectativas que Él nos ha revelado a los que debemos reaccionar si queremos vivir una vida plena y gozosa. Dios llama, se nos anima a aceptar, y luego habrá una abundancia de alegría. Si nos negamos, entonces nos arriesgamos a la posibilidad de que podamos estar perdidos para siempre.

La Sagrada Escritura está llena del ejemplo de éxitos y fracasos que rodean la aceptación o rechazo de Dios. Dios nos ama tanto que Él nos invita constantemente a la relación de la Trinidad, pero la invitación debe ser aceptada por nosotros y, cuando lo es, hay ciertas expectativas que vienen con ella. Seremos sometidos al ridículo y al dolor de la misma manera que Jesús fue durante Su pasión. Estaremos en conflicto y llenos de dudas, de la misma manera que Jesús era. Seremos tentados y desviados. Seremos confundidos y abandonados por nuestros amigos. Sin embargo, así como hubo la Resurrección después de la Pasión, experimentaremos lo mismo. Como Cristianos, estamos unidos a Jesucristo a través de Su Pasión ya través de Su Resurrección. Nuestra propia Resurrección puede ser experimentada de una manera espiritual, pero habrá algún sufrimiento y tormento como resultado. También estaremos bajo el escrutinio de Jesús. Esto se hará de una manera amorosa, pero también habrá algún tipo de tormento a medida que luchamos con cada decisión que tomamos. Nos desafiamos a preguntarnos si lo que hacemos y decimos nos está acercando o alejándonos de Jesucristo. Habrá confusión y frustración, pero será diferente de la confusión y frustración que experimentamos antes. Habrá un propósito para ello. Jesús nos presentará opciones y, al mismo tiempo, nos mostrará la respuesta. Tenemos que aceptar la respuesta.

La respuesta a todos nuestros problemas y la confusión puede ser simple, pero la decisión final puede ser difícil. Este libre albedrío es precioso. Hemos disfrutado de tenerlo y abusar de él al mismo tiempo. Jesús nos pregunta si realmente estamos listos para ofrecerlo de nuevo a él. Hay muchos antes de nosotros que han devuelto, mientras que también hay muchos que se han negado a hacerlo. Los que lo hacen están unidos a Jesús para siempre. Aquellos que no lo hacen, de hecho tendrán consecuencias.

Al final, ¿dónde queremos estar?

Reading 1 Dn 7:9-10, 13-14

As I watched:

Thrones were set up
and the Ancient One took his throne.
His clothing was bright as snow,
and the hair on his head as white as wool;
his throne was flames of fire,
with wheels of burning fire.
A surging stream of fire
flowed out from where he sat;
Thousands upon thousands were ministering to him,
and myriads upon myriads attended him.
The court was convened and the books were opened.

As the visions during the night continued, I saw:

One like a Son of man coming,
on the clouds of heaven;
When he reached the Ancient One
and was presented before him,
The one like a Son of man received dominion, glory, and kingship;
all peoples, nations, and languages serve him.

"Lord, it is good that we are here.
If you wish, I will make three tents here,

"This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased;
listen to him."
When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate

MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS

 The Transfiguration of the Lord was a major event in Jesus’ Ministry and served as a focal point for Peter, James, and John to look back on whenever they were faced with trials and tribulations which tested their faith. Jesus knew that, at the proper time, this event would enforce their faith and the revelation itself would put everything else into perspective. It was no coincidence that these three were chosen as witnesses. They were the “Inner circle” of the Apostles. It is from Peter which would come the foundation of Christ’s Church. James would be the first Apostle to be martyred by Herod Agrippa for speaking so forcefully against those who did not follow Jesus and the acts of pagan customs of the time. He was responsible for evangelizing the faith in Jerusalem and onward to Spain. John would remain long after all the other Apostles were martyred. He would be a guiding hand in the establishment of the early Church and the institution of the traditions and forms of worship we have today. It is from him that we receive the mass, many of the Feast Days on the Liturgical Calendar, and the Gospel of John.

The Transfiguration to us as Christians serves as a message of revelation. It demonstrates exactly who Jesus Christ is and how we should approach all of Sacred Scripture. Moses represents the Law while Elijah represents all of the prophets that came before Jesus up to Saint John the Baptist. Their conversation with Jesus demonstrates how all of us should approach Sacred Scripture: as a revelation of Jesus Christ. God Himself confirms this with the words: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." All that was before Jesus was a culmination of the event of The Incarnation: the Word becoming flesh. It is through The Transfiguration that God reveals everything that was hidden including His intent and His Divine Plan.

All four Gospels mentioned The Transfiguration. In John, it is revealed through the entire Gospel as he relates all that had occurred through the Crucifixion and immediately afterwards. From the beginning, John makes no doubt who Jesus is and how we should embrace Him. This underlines the importance of this event. In it we have a statement from God that emphasizes who Jesus is. We as Christians must approach Jesus Christ this way. We must also approach our quest for knowledge and understanding in Sacred Scripture the same way. We have been handed that which is to serve as the very foundation of our faith: Jesus Christ is the Son of God and we are commanded to listen to Him. What He has said and continues to say is central to our lives and the lives of everyone in the universe. It encompasses God’s Creation in all of its glory and splendor.

For us, through all of the witnesses who came before and offered their lives in either martyrdom or sacrifice, we now have a model in which to live by. If we truly believe in Jesus Christ, then we need to act accordingly. There is no middle ground here. Regardless what this world offers, there is so much more as long as we approach it through Jesus Christ. Just as the Transfiguration served as a vehicle for Peter, James, and John to do the impossible, we now have the same opportunity to accomplish what they accomplish by embracing Jesus Christ. Why would there ever be any half-hearted approach to our faith-life knowing and believing these events have occurred? These events we as Christian view as facts, enforced by the testimony of those who were present. Why would there be any ulterior motive? None can be seen and none can be proven for Peter and James gave their lives in exchange for what they believed while John lived a long, painful, challenging existence to the very end.

All of us are as important as those who gave testimony and witness before. We are inheritors of everything that occurred beforehand. That, in itself, is a great responsibility. We are Keepers of the Faith and Children of God. It is time to act accordingly and enter into our relationship with Jesus Christ. We are Disciples of Christ who carry the message forward from the Apostles. Whatever we are facing in this physical life is nothing in comparison to what the Apostles faced. Just as the Apostles overcame whatever confronted them, even death, so too we are encouraged that we will do the same. We should look on society with contempt, possessing the knowledge that we are part of something bigger and better. When we let that bigger and better influence even the smallest of our actions, then we will be able to become a completely new Creature in Christ.

We are keepers of Divine Revelation. Let us act accordingly and live by the testimony of the witnesses that went before.

Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord

Primera Lectura  – DN 7:9-10, 13-14

Yo, Daniel, tuve una visión nocturna:

Vi que colocaban unos tronos y un anciano se sentó. Su vestido era blanco como la nieve, y sus cabellos, blancos como lana. Su trono, llamas de fuego, con ruedas encendidas. Un río de fuego brotaba delante de él. Miles y miles lo servían, millones y millones estaban a sus órdenes. Comenzó el juicio y se abrieron los libros.

Yo seguí contemplando en mi visión nocturna y vi a alguien semejante a un hijo de hombre, que venía entre las nubes del cielo. Avanzó hacia el anciano de muchos siglos y fue introducido a su presencia. Entonces recibió la soberanía, la gloria y el reino. Y todos los pueblos y naciones de todas las lenguas lo servían.Su poder nunca se acabará, porque es un poder eterno, y su reino jamás será destruido.

Segunda Lectura  – 2 PED 1:16-19

Hermanos: Cuando les anunciamos la venida gloriosa y llena de poder de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, no lo hicimos fundados en fábulas hechas con astucia, sino por haberlo visto con nuestros propios ojos en toda su grandeza. En efecto, Dios lo llenó de gloria y honor, cuando la sublime voz del Padre resonó sobre él, diciendo: "Éste es mi Hijo amado, en quien yo me complazco". Y nosotros escuchamos esta voz, venida del cielo, mientras estábamos con el Señor en el monte santo.

Tenemos también la firmísima palabra de los profetas, a la que con toda razón ustedes consideran como una lámpara que ilumina en la oscuridad, hasta que despunte el día y el lucero de la mañana amanezca en los corazones de ustedes.

Fiesta de la Transfiguracion del Señor

Evangelio – MT 17:1-9

En aquel tiempo, Jesús tomó consigo a Pedro, a Santiago y a Juan, el hermano de éste, y los hizo subir a solas con él a un monte elevado. Ahí se transfiguró en su presencia: su rostro se puso resplandeciente como el sol y sus vestiduras se volvieron blancas como la nieve. De pronto aparecieron ante ellos Moisés y Elías, conversando con Jesús.

Entonces Pedro le dijo a Jesús: "Señor, ¡qué bueno sería quedarnos aquí! Si quieres, haremos aquí tres chozas, una para ti, otra para Moisés y otra para Elías".

Cuando aún estaba hablando, una nube luminosa los cubrió y de ella salió una voz que decía: "Éste es mi Hijo muy amado, en quien tengo puestas mis complacencias; escúchenlo". Al oír esto, los discípulos cayeron rostro en tierra, llenos de un gran temor. Jesús se acercó a ellos, los tocó y les dijo: "Levántense y no teman". Alzando entonces los ojos, ya no vieron a nadie más que a Jesús.

Mientras bajaban del monte, Jesús les ordenó: "No le cuenten a nadie lo que han visto, hasta que el Hijo del hombre haya resucitado de entre los muertos".

MIS HERMANOS Y HERMANAS

 La Transfiguración del Señor fue un acontecimiento importante en el ministerio de Jesús y sirvió como punto focal para que Pedro, Santiago y Juan miraran hacia atrás cada vez que se enfrentaban a pruebas y tribulaciones que ponían a prueba su fe. Jesús sabía que, a su debido tiempo, este acontecimiento impondría su fe y la revelación misma pondría todo lo demás en perspectiva. No fue una coincidencia que estos tres fueron elegidos como testigos. Eran el "Círculo Interior" de los Apóstoles. Es de Pedro que vendría el fundamento de la Iglesia de Cristo. Santiago sería el primer apóstol a ser martirizado por Herodes Agripa por hablar tan enérgicamente contra aquellos que no siguieron a Jesús y los actos de las costumbres paganas de la época. Él era responsable de evangelizar la fe en Jerusalén y en adelante a España. Juan permanecería mucho después de que todos los otros apóstoles fueran martirizados. Él sería una guía en el establecimiento de la Iglesia primitiva y en la institución de las tradiciones y formas de culto que tenemos hoy. Es de él que recibimos la misa, muchas de las Fiestas del Calendario Litúrgico y el Evangelio de Juan.

La Transfiguración para nosotros como cristianos sirve como un mensaje de revelación. Demuestra exactamente quién es Jesucristo y cómo debemos acercarnos a toda la Sagrada Escritura. Moisés representa la Ley mientras Elías representa a todos los profetas que vinieron antes de Jesús hasta San Juan Bautista. Su conversación con Jesús demuestra cómo todos debemos acercarnos a la Sagrada Escritura: como una revelación de Jesucristo. Dios mismo lo confirma con las palabras: "Este es mi Hijo amado, con quien me complazco, y escuchadle". Todo lo que fue antes de Jesús fue la culminación del acontecimiento de La Encarnación: el Verbo se hizo carne. Es a través de La Transfiguración que Dios revela todo lo que estaba oculto incluyendo Su intención y Su Plan Divino.

Los cuatro Evangelios mencionaron La Transfiguración. En Juan, se revela a través de todo el Evangelio, ya que él relata todo lo que había ocurrido a través de la Crucifixión e inmediatamente después. Desde el principio, Juan no duda quién es Jesús y cómo debemos abrazarlo. Esto subraya la importancia de este evento. En ella tenemos una declaración de Dios que enfatiza quién es Jesús. Como cristianos debemos acercarnos a Jesucristo de esta manera. También debemos abordar la búsqueda del conocimiento y la comprensión en la Sagrada Escritura de la misma manera. Nos ha sido entregado lo que debe servir como el fundamento mismo de nuestra fe: Jesucristo es el Hijo de Dios y se nos manda escucharlo. Lo que Él ha dicho y continúa diciendo es fundamental para nuestras vidas y las vidas de todos en el universo. Abarca la Creación de Dios en toda su gloria y esplendor.

Para nosotros, a través de todos los testigos que vinieron antes y ofrecieron sus vidas en martirio o sacrificio, ahora tenemos un modelo en el cual vivir. Si realmente creemos en Jesucristo, entonces debemos actuar en consecuencia. Aquí no hay medio. Independientemente de lo que este mundo ofrece, hay mucho más, siempre y cuando nos acercamos a ella a través de Jesucristo. Así como la Transfiguración sirvió como vehículo para que Pedro, Santiago y Juan hicieran lo imposible, ahora tenemos la misma oportunidad de lograr lo que logran abrazando a Jesucristo. ¿Por qué habrá alguna vez un enfoque medio de corazón a nuestra vida de fe sabiendo y creyendo que estos eventos han ocurrido? Estos acontecimientos que nosotros consideramos cristianos como hechos, reforzados por el testimonio de los presentes. ¿Por qué habría algún motivo ulterior? Nadie puede ser visto y ninguno puede ser probado para Peter y James dio sus vidas a cambio de lo que creyeron mientras que Juan vivió una existencia larga, dolorosa, desafiadora hasta el final.

Todos nosotros somos tan importantes como aquellos que dieron testimonio y testigos antes. Somos herederos de todo lo que ocurrió de antemano. Eso, en sí mismo, es una gran responsabilidad. Somos Guardianes de la Fe e Hijos de Dios. Es hora de actuar en consecuencia y entrar en nuestra relación con Jesucristo. Somos Discípulos de Cristo que llevamos el mensaje de los Apóstoles. Todo lo que estamos enfrentando en esta vida física no es nada en comparación con lo que los Apóstoles enfrentan. Así como los Apóstoles vencieron lo que los enfrentó, incluso la muerte, también nos anima que hagamos lo mismo. Debemos mirar a la sociedad con desprecio, poseer el conocimiento de que somos parte de algo más grande y mejor. Cuando dejamos que esa influencia más grande y mejor aún la más pequeña de nuestras acciones, entonces podremos convertirnos en una criatura completamente nueva en Cristo.

Somos guardianes de la Revelación Divina. Actuemos en consecuencia y vivamos por el testimonio de los testigos anteriores.
