Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to this world.
If my kingdom did belong to this world,
my attendants would be fighting
to keep me from being handed over to the Jews.
But as it is, my kingdom is not here."
So Pilate said to him, "Then you are a king?"
Jesus answered, "You say I am a king.
For this I was born and for this I came into the world,
to testify to the truth.
Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice."

MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS,

 This Sunday marks the last Sunday in Ordinary Time. It is the last Sunday in the Liturgical Year of the Church. The days are getting shorter, coinciding with the coming of winter. Light is fading fast and it feels as if life is withdrawing from the world around us. It is cold outside; lonely and foreboding. During this time there may be a feeling of hopelessness coupled with many fears of what is to come in the future. The presence of uncertainties can bring about great anxieties. Joy in the moment is lost while sadness looms.

Today serves as a reminder of who we are as Christians and what we believe. Even though darkness looms there is something greater than it which will always be the victor against it. The light is Jesus Christ and He is our King. It is through Him that everything can be put into order and things can be seen with greater clarity. As it is written in the Gospel of John:

“…the light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.”

As we physically descend into a dark period of the season we need to remind ourselves that we can still dwell in the light spiritually. With that focus, our thoughts and actions can follow. Seeking encouragement with Jesus Christ can give us the tools necessary to combat the darkness which threatens to envelope us and we can conquer it if we desire to do so. The darkness is present but it does not have to be the master of us.

It is very easy to accept feelings of sadness or depression if we feed those thoughts.  The Holy Mother Church gives us the Season of Advent and this marvelous feast day as tools to combat this presence of hopelessness. She challenges us to stand up and recognize Jesus Christ as the King of the Universe: an all-encompassing statement of fact and recognition that we are invited to shout with joy and love. It is He that we recognize as the Son of God and it is He we have surrendered our will to in choosing to love Him and be loved by Him completely. As a Christian Community we are asked to gather together in commemoration and worship. We are then invited to journey forward to the Light of Christ unafraid of what lies ahead.

The answers to our most troubling questions and to our greatest fears have already been responded to. Christ dwells amongst us and soon we will be with Him completely when He returns to claim us as His own. As the Prophet Daniel said in the Scripture Reading today:

“His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not be taken away, his kingship shall not be destroyed.”

Being fully receptive to these words can bring about a feeling of peace and love unparallel to anything experienced before. Whatever conflicts that we face can be overcome with Jesus Christ being central in our lives and us listening to Him. This is what He promises and this is what He is capable of doing.

Jesus said that His kingdom did not belong to this world. It is beyond this world and is not held to the rules and laws of this world, for He created this world and the universe. We as His children are inheritors of His kingdom and can rise above the dictations of this world by embracing His wants above what we want and desire. It must be understood that what we want and desire is limited and will soon pass away while He is forever. We are then presented with a choice: To pursue a path that we want only to be limited by what this world offers or accept the eternal which is Jesus Christ.

There is more to this world and God’s Creation than what is directly in front of us. We should not limit God and what God can do by our own experiences and senses. Our faith encourages us to look beyond that and search for God in everything including that which might be clothed in the darkness of not knowing. It is through our relationship with God that the light breaks through the night and brings about the day. For even the night is subject to the King of the Universe.

Tu pueblo y los sumos sacerdotes te han entregado a mí. ¿Qué es lo que has hecho?" Jesús le contestó: "Mi Reino no es de este mundo. Si mi Reino fuera de este mundo, mis servidores habrían luchado para que no cayera yo en manos de los judíos. Pero mi Reino no es de aquí".

Pilato le dijo: "¿Conque tú eres rey?" Jesús le contestó: "Tú lo has dicho. Soy rey. Yo nací y vine al mundo para ser testigo de la verdad. Todo el que es de la verdad, escucha mi voz".

MIS HERMANOS Y HERMANAS,

 Este domingo marca el último domingo del tiempo ordinario. Es el último domingo del año litúrgico de la Iglesia. Los días se acortan, coincidiendo con la llegada del invierno. La luz se está desvaneciendo rápidamente y se siente como si la vida se estuviera retirando del mundo que nos rodea. Esta frio afuera; solitario y presentimiento. Durante este tiempo puede haber una sensación de desesperanza junto con muchos temores de lo que vendrá en el futuro. La presencia de incertidumbres puede provocar grandes inquietudes. La alegría en el momento se pierde mientras la tristeza se avecina

Hoy sirve como un recordatorio de quiénes somos como cristianos y de lo que creemos. Aunque la oscuridad se avecina, hay algo más grande que eso, que siempre será el vencedor contra ella. La luz es Jesucristo y Él es nuestro Rey. Es a través de Él que todo puede ponerse en orden y las cosas se pueden ver con mayor claridad. Como está escrito en el evangelio de Juan:

"... la luz brilla en la oscuridad y la oscuridad no la ha vencido".

A medida que descendemos físicamente a un período oscuro de la temporada, debemos recordarnos que todavía podemos vivir espiritualmente en la luz. Con ese enfoque, nuestros pensamientos y acciones pueden seguir. Buscar aliento con Jesucristo puede darnos las herramientas necesarias para combatir la oscuridad que amenaza con envolvernos y podemos conquistarla si lo deseamos. La oscuridad está presente pero no tiene que ser el amo de nosotros.

Es muy fácil aceptar sentimientos de tristeza o depresión si alimentamos esos pensamientos. La Santa Madre Iglesia nos da la temporada de Adviento y esta maravillosa fiesta como herramientas para combatir esta presencia de desesperanza. Ella nos desafía a pararnos y reconocer a Jesucristo como el Rey del Universo: una declaración de hecho y reconocimiento que lo invita a gritar con alegría y amor. Es a Él a quien reconocemos como el Hijo de Dios y es a Él a quien hemos entregado nuestra voluntad al elegir amarlo y ser amado por Él completamente. Como comunidad cristiana se nos pide que nos reunamos en conmemoración y adoración. Luego se nos invita a caminar hacia la Luz de Cristo sin temor a lo que nos espera.

Las respuestas a nuestras preguntas más inquietantes y a nuestros mayores temores ya han sido respondidas. Cristo mora entre nosotros y pronto estaremos con Él completamente cuando Él regrese para reclamarnos como suyos. Como dijo el profeta Daniel en la Lectura de las Escrituras de hoy:

"Su dominio es un dominio eterno que no será quitado, su reinado no será destruido".

Ser plenamente receptivo a estas palabras puede generar un sentimiento de paz y amor sin paralelo a cualquier experiencia anterior. Cualquier conflicto que enfrentemos puede ser superado con Jesucristo siendo central en nuestras vidas y nosotros escuchándolo. Esto es lo que Él promete y esto es lo que Él es capaz de hacer.

Jesús dijo que su reino no pertenecía a este mundo. Está más allá de este mundo y no está sujeto a las reglas y leyes de este mundo, porque Él creó este mundo y el universo. Nosotros, como sus hijos, somos herederos de su reino y podemos elevarnos por encima de los dictados de este mundo al abrazar sus deseos por encima de lo que queremos y deseamos. Debe entenderse que lo que deseamos y deseamos es limitado y pronto pasará mientras Él sea para siempre. Entonces se nos presenta una opción: seguir un camino que solo queremos limitarnos por lo que ofrece este mundo o aceptar lo eterno que es Jesucristo.

Hay más en este mundo y en la Creación de Dios que lo que está directamente delante de nosotros. No debemos limitar a Dios y lo que Dios puede hacer por nuestras propias experiencias y sentidos. Nuestra fe nos anima a mirar más allá de eso y buscar a Dios en todo, incluso en aquello que podría estar vestido en la oscuridad de no saber. Es a través de nuestra relación con Dios que la luz atraviesa la noche y produce el día. Porque incluso la noche está sujeta al Rey del Universo.

Brothers and sisters:

you know that summer is near.
In the same way, when you see these things happening,
know that he is near, at the gates.

this generation will not pass away

MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS,

 Being diverted from what is directly in front of us and losing our focus on what is truly important in our lives presents us with a unique challenge regarding our faith. At a very early age we are taught that planning things both in the short term and the long term is a very good thing. We are told that having more of an understanding about where we are going in the future insures us a higher rate of success. Society itself is structured around this concept from finances, events, gatherings, and so much more from what we are going to eat to what we are going to wear. Being exposed to this way of looking at things naturally permeates into our faith-life. The importance of daily interactions becomes overlooked as our minds are intent on what lies ahead. This way at looking at things is not what Jesus wants for us. Instead, He wants us to experience all that we can in the moment.

Staying in the moment causes our mind to focus on what is directly in front of us. Our senses will then be concentrated on the same and our physical and mental beings will be working in unison. With that, our spirituality will follow. God will naturally be inserted into the experience because He is already an intricate part of us. Planning for the future is an exercise of our free will and our desire to control events that we will be experiencing. When our free will is exercised based on our needs and wants, our closeness to God diminishes and God will be removed from the experience. Even though there will always be a need for some level of planning we cannot forget about the present and the joys that it can bring.

In the Gospel Reading today Jesus speaks about the destruction of the Temple, the coming Tribulation, and the Coming of the Son of Man. After He described the events He then reminded His disciples that there would be false prophets, false Messiahs, and other things which would perpetuate lies. He told of things that would happen which would indicate that the time for these events were upon them but then He offered them encouragement. He told them not to worry about the times described and to have faith in God. All answers would be provided to them and their faith would save them. He told them to be watchful and vigilant but, at the same time, no one knows the day or the hour when the Son of Man would arrive. Those who would claim to know when the events are upon them and the arrival of the Son of Man is imminent are not to be believed.

If we have been instructed by Jesus Himself not to contemplate the day or the hour of His coming or to believe anyone who claims to have knowledge of such an event, then what are we to do? It is apparent that we should be always prepared in the moment for what is to come in the future without focusing on the future for no one knows when it is going to occur. Being prepared now means that we live our lives with Jesus now. We should let Him guide us in the present by welcoming Him into a relationship with us. When we do this then what we experience through a relationship with Him becomes predominant in our lives. Each second, right when it happens, becomes the most important period of time in our lives. Just being with Jesus becomes enough. Nothing more is needed. Whatever comes afterwards will come but we will still be here with our savior.

This way of thinking is not easy. It goes against what we learned since we were children. Just focusing on it will bring us to a better state of mind and will help us grow spiritually. There is no success or failure in regards to it. It is just something to be worked on. When we work on it, we will experience results immediately and we will change for the better.  Living our lives knowing that Jesus has already given himself as a sacrifice for our salvation and that He loves us with an incomparable love is the key to joy and happiness. Through this living tomorrow stays tomorrow and today is where we will always be.

Heb 10, 11-14. 18

Hermanos: En la antigua alianza los sacerdotes ofrecían en el templo, diariamente y de pie, los mismos sacrificios, que no podían perdonar los pecados. Cristo, en cambio, ofreció un solo sacrificio por los pecados y se sentó para siempre a la derecha de Dios; no le queda sino aguardar a que sus enemigos sean puestos bajo sus pies. Así, con una sola ofrenda, hizo perfectos para siempre a los que ha santificado. Porque una vez que los pecados han sido perdonados, ya no hacen falta más ofrendas por ellos.

Mc 13, 24-32

E n aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: "Cuando lleguen aquellos días, después de la gran tribulación, la luz del sol se apagará, no brillará la luna, caerán del cielo las estrellas y el universo entero se conmoverá. Entonces verán venir al Hijo del hombre sobre las nubes con gran poder y majestad. Y él enviará a sus ángeles a congregar a sus elegidos desde los cuatro puntos cardinales y desde lo más profundo de la tierra a lo más alto del cielo.

Entiendan esto con el ejemplo de la higuera. Cuando las ramas se ponen tiernas y brotan las hojas, ustedes saben que el verano está cerca. Así también, cuando vean ustedes que suceden estas cosas, sepan que el fin ya está cerca, ya está a la puerta. En verdad que no pasará esta generación sin que todo esto se cumpla. Podrán dejar de existir el cielo y la tierra, pero mis palabras no dejarán de cumplirse. Nadie conoce el día ni la hora. Ni los ángeles del cielo ni el Hijo; solamente el Padre''.

MIS HERMANOS Y HERMANAS,

 Desviarnos de lo que está directamente frente a nosotros y perder nuestro enfoque en lo que es verdaderamente importante en nuestras vidas nos presenta un desafío único con respecto a nuestra fe. Desde muy temprana edad se nos enseña que planificar cosas tanto a corto como a largo plazo es algo muy bueno. Se nos dice que tener un mayor entendimiento acerca de hacia dónde nos dirigimos en el futuro nos asegura una mayor tasa de éxito. La sociedad en sí misma está estructurada en torno a este concepto, desde finanzas, eventos, reuniones y mucho más, desde lo que vamos a comer a lo que vamos a vestir. Estar expuesto a esta forma de ver las cosas impregna naturalmente en nuestra vida de fe. La importancia de las interacciones diarias se pasa por alto a medida que nuestras mentes están concentradas en lo que está por venir. De esta manera, mirar las cosas no es lo que Jesús quiere para nosotros. En cambio, Él quiere que experimentemos todo lo que podamos en el momento.

Permanecer en el momento hace que nuestra mente se enfoque en lo que está directamente delante de nosotros. Nuestros sentidos se concentrarán en lo mismo y nuestros seres físicos y mentales trabajarán al unísono. Con eso, seguirá nuestra espiritualidad. Dios naturalmente se insertará en la experiencia porque ya es una parte intrincada de nosotros. La planificación para el futuro es un ejercicio de nuestro libre albedrío y nuestro deseo de controlar los eventos que estaremos experimentando. Cuando nuestro libre albedrío se ejerce de acuerdo con nuestras necesidades y deseos, nuestra cercanía con Dios disminuye y Dios será eliminado de la experiencia. Aunque siempre habrá necesidad de algún nivel de planificación, no podemos olvidarnos del presente y las alegrías que puede traer.

En la lectura del Evangelio de hoy, Jesús habla de la destrucción del Templo, la venidera Tribulación y la Venida del Hijo del Hombre. Después de que describió los eventos, recordó a sus discípulos que habría falsos profetas, falsos mesías y otras cosas que perpetuarían las mentiras. Él habló de cosas que ocurrirían, lo que indicaría que el momento de estos eventos estaba sobre ellos, pero luego les ofreció ánimo. Les dijo que no se preocuparan por los tiempos descritos y que tuvieran fe en Dios. Todas las respuestas les serían proporcionadas y su fe los salvaría. Les dijo que estuvieran vigilantes y vigilantes, pero, al mismo tiempo, nadie sabe el día ni la hora en que el Hijo del Hombre llegaría. No se puede creer a los que dicen saber cuándo están los acontecimientos sobre ellos y la llegada del Hijo del Hombre es inminente.

Si Jesús mismo nos ha indicado que no contemplemos el día o la hora de su venida o que creamos a alguien que afirme tener conocimiento de tal evento, ¿qué debemos hacer? Es evidente que debemos estar siempre preparados en el momento para lo que vendrá en el futuro sin centrarnos en el futuro, porque nadie sabe cuándo va a ocurrir. Estar preparado ahora significa que vivimos nuestras vidas con Jesús ahora. Deberíamos dejar que Él nos guíe en el presente dándole la bienvenida a una relación con nosotros. Cuando hacemos esto, entonces lo que experimentamos a través de una relación con Él se vuelve predominante en nuestras vidas. Cada segundo, justo cuando sucede, se convierte en el período de tiempo más importante de nuestras vidas. El solo hecho de estar con Jesús es suficiente. No se necesita nada más. Lo que venga después vendrá, pero seguiremos aquí con nuestro salvador.

Esta forma de pensar no es fácil. Va en contra de lo que aprendimos desde que éramos niños. Centrarse en eso nos llevará a un mejor estado de ánimo y nos ayudará a crecer espiritualmente. No hay éxito o fracaso en lo que se refiere a ello. Es solo algo en lo que hay que trabajar. Cuando trabajemos en ello, experimentaremos resultados de inmediato y cambiaremos para mejorar. Vivir nuestras vidas sabiendo que Jesús ya se ha entregado a sí mismo como sacrificio por nuestra salvación y que nos ama con un amor incomparable es la clave del gozo y la felicidad. A través de este vivir el mañana se queda mañana y hoy es donde siempre estaremos.
