Reading 2 Jas 2:1-5

My brothers and sisters, show no partiality

and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes
and say, “Sit here, please, ”
while you say to the poor one, “Stand there, ” or “Sit at my feet, ”
have you not made distinctions among yourselves
and become judges with evil designs?

Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters.
Did not God choose those who are poor in the world
to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom
that he promised to those who love him?

Gospel Mk 7:31-37

Again Jesus left the district of Tyre
and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee,

And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment
and begged him to lay his hand on him.
He took him off by himself away from the crowd.
He put his finger into the man’s ears
and, spitting, touched his tongue;
then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him,
“Ephphatha!”— that is, “Be opened!” —
And immediately the man’s ears were opened,
his speech impediment was removed,
and he spoke plainly.
He ordered them not to tell anyone.
But the more he ordered them not to,
the more they proclaimed it.
They were exceedingly astonished and they said,
“He has done all things well.
He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS,

 The Prophet Isaiah announced,

“Here is your God, he comes with vindication.”

This means that God is here with us now and forever. Our Creator and Our Father loves us so much and is so invested in our lives that He has chosen to enter into a personal relationship with us where we can receive all the benefits of His love. He never stops trying to bring us closer to Him and He never stops trying to reveal to us a better way of how we can live our lives. Through the Prophet Isaiah, He reveals that it is through Him and through Jesus Christ that we are able to see the world as it really is, permeating with His love. If we are open to the experience of His love, then we will then understand that He is here to save us from a life that can never be as fulfilling and joyous as one that involves Him.

It is through Jesus Christ that we are drawn to the Father. When we accept the truth that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and our savior, our ears and eyes are then open to this new reality. It is a reality centered in the truth. This act of acceptance brings about continuous revelation and a stream of wisdom which flows into us from the Father then bursts forth into the world around us. We are affected and then everything else that we interact with is also affected as a result. We are fundamentally joined with the rest of God’s Creation where before we separated from it by our own choice and the choices we made in our life without the presence of God. We will then find ourselves participators in the Holy Trinity.

We all come to Jesus Christ wounded and broken. No one is better and no one is worse. In fact, those who found themselves in a lesser position in this society based on their wealth and the perceptions of others are more apt to understand and receive Jesus Christ more readily than others. The wealth of this world is a disadvantage when experiencing the wealth of God. Jesus himself said that no man can serve two masters. The master of materialism and material wealth, Satan, needs to be separated from our thoughts and actions so that the only thing that remains is Jesus. He then becomes our one and only master and one we will be more open to answering to because He can be recognized as the one who we have pledged to serve completely.

In service to Jesus Christ is beautiful. What we will be working for through Him is something that will last forever. This is what a life with Jesus Christ is: an eternity filled with joy that we will be participators in and have an impact on through our own actions and thoughts. We have received a promise from Jesus Christ: our actions will have fruitful consequences in this life and the next. Nothing can be negative with Jesus Christ. He is the ultimate good so there is an impossibility of bad. Not many things are guaranteed in this life but this is. In fact, the more we strip ourselves of the things that this world offers, the more we will be able to receive good things from it. These things are things that can only come from God. The less focused we are on the measures of success laid out to us by this world, the more we will be able to be in tune with the successes we can accomplish with Jesus Christ. If we strive to lead our lives in this manner, the successes with Jesus will then make us comprehend what He really wants for us in this life and the next. Molding our lives around this will then allow us to know that we are loved and with that love the capability of us loving everyone and everything will increase, leading to an overwhelming peace and satisfaction in all of our thoughts and actions.

Sant 2, 1-5

Hermanos: Puesto que ustedes tienen fe en nuestro Señor Jesucristo glorificado, no tengan favoritismos. Supongamos que entran al mismo tiempo en su reunión un hombre con un anillo de oro, lujosamente vestido, y un pobre andrajoso, y que fijan ustedes la mirada en el que lleva el traje elegante y le dicen: "Tú, siéntate aquí, cómodamente". En cambio, le dicen al pobre: "Tú, párate allá o siéntate aquí en el suelo, a mis pies". ¿No es esto tener favoritismos y juzgar con criterios torcidos?

Queridos hermanos, ¿acaso no ha elegido Dios a los pobres de este mundo para hacerlos ricos en la fe y herederos del Reino que prometió a los que lo aman?

Mc 7, 31-37

En aquel tiempo, salió Jesús de la región de Tiro y vino de nuevo, por Sidón, al mar de Galilea, atravesando la región de Decápolis. Le llevaron entonces a un hombre sordo y tartamudo, y le suplicaban que le impusiera las manos. Él lo apartó a un lado de la gente, le metió los dedos en los oídos y le tocó la lengua con saliva. Después, mirando al cielo, suspiró y le dijo: "¡Effetá!" (que quiere decir "¡Abrete!"). Al momento se le abrieron los oídos, se le soltó la traba de la lengua y empezó a hablar sin dificultad.

Él les mandó que no lo dijeran a nadie; pero cuanto más se lo mandaba, ellos con más insistencia lo proclamaban; y todos estaban asombrados y decían: "¡Qué bien lo hace todo! Hace oír a los sordos y hablar a los mudos".

MIS HERMANOS Y HERMANAS,

 El profeta Isaías anunció,

"Aquí está tu Dios, viene con vindicación".

Esto significa que Dios está aquí con nosotros ahora y para siempre. Nuestro Creador y Padre Nuestro nos ama tanto y está tan involucrado en nuestras vidas que ha elegido entrar en una relación personal con nosotros donde podemos recibir todos los beneficios de su amor. Él nunca deja de tratar de acercarnos a Él y nunca deja de tratar de revelarnos una mejor manera de cómo podemos vivir nuestras vidas. A través del profeta Isaías, Él revela que es a través de Él y por medio de Jesucristo que podemos ver el mundo tal como es, impregnando su amor. Si estamos abiertos a la experiencia de su amor, entonces comprenderemos que está aquí para salvarnos de una vida que nunca podrá ser tan satisfactoria y gozosa como la que lo involucra.

Es a través de Jesucristo que somos atraídos por el Padre. Cuando aceptamos la verdad de que Jesucristo es el Hijo de Dios y nuestro salvador, nuestros oídos y ojos están abiertos a esta nueva realidad. Es una realidad centrada en la verdad. Este acto de aceptación produce una revelación continua y una corriente de sabiduría que fluye hacia nosotros desde el Padre y luego irrumpe en el mundo que nos rodea. Estamos afectados y todo lo demás con lo que interactuamos también se ve afectado como resultado. Estamos fundamentalmente unidos al resto de la Creación de Dios, donde antes nos separamos de ella por nuestra propia elección y las decisiones que tomamos en nuestra vida sin la presencia de Dios. Entonces nos encontraremos participando en la Santísima Trinidad.

Todos venimos a Jesucristo heridos y quebrantados. Nadie es mejor y nadie es peor. De hecho, aquellos que se encontraron en una posición menor en esta sociedad basada en su riqueza y las percepciones de los demás son más aptos para entender y recibir a Jesucristo más fácilmente que otros. La riqueza de este mundo es una desventaja cuando se experimenta la riqueza de Dios. Jesús mismo dijo que ningún hombre puede servir a dos amos. El maestro del materialismo y la riqueza material, Satanás, necesita separarse de nuestros pensamientos y acciones para que lo único que quede sea Jesús. Luego se convierte en nuestro único maestro y al que estaremos más dispuestos a responder porque puede ser reconocido como aquel a quien nos hemos comprometido a servir por completo.

Al servicio de Jesucristo, es hermoso. Para lo que trabajaremos a través de Él es algo que durará para siempre. Esto es lo que es una vida con Jesucristo: una eternidad llena de alegría en la que seremos partícipes y tendremos un impacto a través de nuestras propias acciones y pensamientos. Hemos recibido una promesa de Jesucristo: nuestras acciones tendrán consecuencias fructíferas en esta vida y la próxima. Nada puede ser negativo con Jesucristo. Él es el bien supremo, entonces hay una imposibilidad de malo. No muchas cosas están garantizadas en esta vida, pero esto es así. De hecho, cuanto más nos despojemos de las cosas que ofrece este mundo, más podremos recibir cosas buenas de él. Estas cosas son cosas que solo pueden venir de Dios. Mientras menos enfocados estemos en las medidas de éxito que nos presenta este mundo, más podremos estar en sintonía con los éxitos que podemos lograr con Jesucristo. Si nos esforzamos por llevar nuestras vidas de esta manera, los éxitos con Jesús nos harán comprender lo que Él realmente quiere para nosotros en esta vida y la próxima. Moldear nuestras vidas en torno a esto nos permitirá saber que somos amados y que con ese amor seremos capaces de amar a todos y todo se incrementará, lo que nos llevará a una paz y satisfacción abrumadoras en todos nuestros pensamientos y acciones.

Gospel Mk 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

When the Pharisees with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem
gathered around Jesus,
they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals
with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands.
—For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews,
do not eat without carefully washing their hands,
keeping the tradition of the elders.
And on coming from the marketplace
they do not eat without purifying themselves.
And there are many other things that they have traditionally observed,
the purification of cups and jugs and kettles and beds. —
So the Pharisees and scribes questioned him,
"Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders
but instead eat a meal with unclean hands?"
He responded,
"Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written:
This people honors me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me;
in vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines human precepts.
You disregard God's commandment but cling to human tradition."

He summoned the crowd again and said to them,
"Hear me, all of you, and understand.
Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person;
but the things that come out from within are what defile.

"From within people, from their hearts,
come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder,
adultery, greed, malice, deceit,
licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly.
All these evils come from within and they defile."

MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS,

 The Letter of James brings to us today a wonderful instruction:

“Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves.”

To be “Doers of the word” we must let what we read from Sacred Scripture and what we hear from our brothers and sisters, influenced by God, affects us spiritually. There will be a reaction from it that will then prompt us to act out what we feel inside. All that we receive as instruction and wisdom from God is an expression of His love for us. That love is meant to be shared and celebrated. When it is acted upon good things will be the result. The only thing preventing us from receiving the full benefit from this is us resisting a relationship with Him or we defining the terms of that relationship. He is constantly calling to us to receive him completely and to surrender to Him. It is entirely up to us if we are going to be complete benefactors to the gifts He is ready to bequeath on us. The moment this occurs, our lives can be changed forever. It can mark the beginning of a new journey and a new life.

This new life brings us into balance with the world around us. Henceforth, all that we experience will be influenced by the presence of God. We become vehicles of change because our actions are those of the Holy Spirit and ourselves in communion together. The Spirit becomes a unifying force with everyone and everything around us. There is no more conflict or discord. The only time this occurs is when we struggle to take our will back from Him and make decisions without keeping Him involved in the process which then leads us to sin. This will definitely happen at times as Jesus reminds us that evilness comes from within but it can be easily rectified by a realization that what we are doing is wrong and a commitment to reestablish our relationship with Him. These are adjustments that should be expected and even welcomed if our faith is to grow stronger.  

We are constantly called to put our faith into action. What we do on the outside in this physical world is an expression of our inward spirituality. Good works should flow naturally in celebration of the Love of God which is present within us. This is not a requirement but instead is a natural occurrence which will happen oftentimes without us knowing it. Our conscious led by the Holy Spirit will slowly influence then ultimately change our decision-making process. God’s will and our will are merged together. When there is harmony between the two, we are then in harmony with God’s entire creation. From there, only good things can result.

Saint James tells us that,

 “All good giving and every perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of lights.”

God is perfect and what He is offering is perfection through Him. It is us who take what is uncorrupted and make it corrupted. Staying focused on the ultimate good, which is God, enables us to reduce our imperfections while we journey towards a perfect life with God through Jesus Christ. During this process of change, we become workers in the field building up the Kingdom of God here on this earth. As Jesus told his disciples,

“The Kingdom of God is within you.”

What we do outwardly is a reflection of where we are spiritually with God. Working in conjunction with all those who share the same path of goodness brings about more good. The bad is forced out and rejected in favor of what is good bringing about a joyous result. We become receptors of God’s Love and producers of it simultaneously. Enshrouded in goodness brings about more goodness while what is bad is forced out until all that remains is God’s Love as a guiding force in our lives.

En aquellos días, habló Moisés al pueblo, diciendo: "Ahora, Israel, escucha los mandatos y preceptos que te enseño, para que los pongas en práctica y puedas así vivir y entrar a tomar posesión de la tierra que el Señor, Dios de tus padres, te va a dar.

No añadirán nada ni quitarán nada a lo que les mando: Cumplan los mandamientos del Señor que yo les enseño, como me ordena el Señor, mi Dios. Guárdenlos y cúmplanlos porque ellos son la sabiduría y la prudencia de ustedes a los ojos de los pueblos. Cuando tengan noticias de todos estos preceptos, los pueblos se dirán: 'En verdad esta gran nación es un pueblo sabio y prudente'.

Porque, ¿cuál otra nación hay tan grande que tenga dioses tan cercanos como lo está nuestro Dios, siempre que lo invocamos? ¿Cuál es la gran nación cuyos mandatos y preceptos sean tan justos como toda esta ley que ahora les doy?''.

Sant1, 17-18. 21b-22. 27

Hermanos: Todo beneficio y todo don perfecto viene de lo alto, del creador de la luz, en quien no hay ni cambios ni sombras. Por su propia voluntad nos engendró por medio del Evangelio para que fuéramos, en cierto modo, primicias de sus creaturas.

Acepten dócilmente la palabra que ha sido sembrada en ustedes y es capaz de salvarlos. Pongan en práctica esa palabra y no se limiten a escucharla, engañándose a ustedes mismos. La religión pura e intachable a los ojos de Dios Padre, consiste en visitar a los huérfanos y a las viudas en sus tribulaciones, y en guardarse de este mundo corrompido.

Mc 7, 1-8. 14-15. 21-23

En aquel tiempo, se acercaron a Jesús los fariseos y algunos escribas venidos de Jerusalén. Viendo que algunos de los discípulos de Jesús comían con las manos impuras, es decir, sin habérselas lavado, los fariseos y los escribas le preguntaron: "¿Por qué tus discípulos comen con manos impuras y no siguen la tradición de nuestros mayores?" (Los fariseos y los judíos, en general, no comen sin lavarse antes las manos hasta el codo, siguiendo la tradición de sus mayores; al volver del mercado, no comen sin hacer primero las abluciones, y observan muchas otras cosas por tradición, como purificar los vasos, las jarras y las ollas).

Jesús les contestó: "¡Qué bien profetizó Isaías sobre ustedes, hipócritas, cuando escribió: Este pueblo me honra con los labios, pero su corazón está lejos de mí. Es inútil el culto que me rinden, porque enseñan doctrinas que no son sino preceptos humanos! Ustedes dejan a un lado el mandamiento de Dios, para aferrarse a las tradiciones de los hombres".

Después, Jesús llamó a la gente y les dijo: "Escúchenme todos y entiéndanme. Nada que entre de fuera puede manchar al hombre; lo que sí lo mancha es lo que sale de dentro; porque del corazón del hombre salen las intenciones malas, las fornicaciones, los robos, los homicidios, los adulterios, las codicias, las injusticias, los fraudes, el desenfreno, las envidias, la difamación, el orgullo y la frivolidad. Todas estas maldades salen de dentro y manchan al hombre".

MIS HERMANOS Y HERMANAS,

 La Carta de Santiago nos trae hoy una maravillosa instrucción:

"Sed hacedores de la palabra y no oidores solamente, engañándose a sí mismos".

Para ser "hacedores de la palabra" debemos dejar que lo que leemos de la Sagrada Escritura y lo que escuchamos de nuestros hermanos y hermanas, influenciados por Dios, nos afecte espiritualmente. Habrá una reacción que nos impulsará a actuar lo que sentimos dentro. Todo lo que recibimos como instrucción y sabiduría de Dios es una expresión de su amor por nosotros. Ese amor debe ser compartido y celebrado. Cuando se actúa sobre cosas buenas será el resultado. Lo único que nos impide recibir el beneficio completo de esto es que nos resistamos a una relación con él o que definamos los términos de esa relación. Él nos llama constantemente para recibirlo por completo y rendirse a él. Depende totalmente de nosotros si vamos a ser benefactores completos de los regalos que Él está listo para legarnos. En el momento en que esto ocurre, nuestras vidas pueden cambiar para siempre. Puede marcar el comienzo de un nuevo viaje y una nueva vida.

Esta nueva vida nos lleva al equilibrio con el mundo que nos rodea. De ahora en adelante, todo lo que experimentemos estará influenciado por la presencia de Dios. Nos convertimos en vehículos de cambio porque nuestras acciones son las del Espíritu Santo y nosotros mismos en comunión juntos. El Espíritu se convierte en una fuerza unificadora con todos y todo lo que nos rodea. No hay más conflicto o discordia. El único momento en que esto ocurre es cuando luchamos por quitarle nuestra voluntad y tomar decisiones sin mantenerlo involucrado en el proceso que luego nos lleva al pecado. Esto definitivamente sucederá a veces cuando Jesús nos recuerda que la maldad viene desde adentro, pero puede rectificarse fácilmente al darse cuenta de que lo que estamos haciendo está mal y comprometernos a restablecer nuestra relación con él. Estos son ajustes que deberían esperarse e incluso aceptarse si nuestra fe es fortalecerse.

Estamos constantemente llamados a poner nuestra fe en acción. Lo que hacemos en el exterior en este mundo físico es una expresión de nuestra espiritualidad interior. Las buenas obras deben fluir naturalmente en celebración del Amor de Dios que está presente en nosotros. Esto no es un requisito, sino que es una ocurrencia natural que ocurrirá a menudo sin que nosotros lo sepamos. Nuestro consciente dirigido por el Espíritu Santo influirá lentamente y finalmente cambiará nuestro proceso de toma de decisiones. La voluntad de Dios y nuestra voluntad se fusionaron. Cuando hay armonía entre los dos, entonces estamos en armonía con toda la creación de Dios. A partir de ahí, solo pueden obtenerse cosas buenas.

Saint James nos dice eso,

 "Todo buen obsequio y todo obsequio perfecto es desde arriba,
bajando del Padre de las luces ".

Dios es perfecto y lo que está ofreciendo es la perfección a través de él. Somos nosotros los que tomamos lo que no está corrupto y lo corrompemos. Mantenerse enfocado en el bien supremo, que es Dios, nos permite reducir nuestras imperfecciones mientras viajamos hacia una vida perfecta con Dios a través de Jesucristo. Durante este proceso de cambio, nos convertimos en trabajadores en el campo construyendo el Reino de Dios aquí en esta tierra. Como Jesús les dijo a sus discípulos,

"El Reino de Dios está dentro de ti".

Lo que hacemos externamente es un reflejo de dónde estamos espiritualmente con Dios. Trabajar en conjunto con todos aquellos que comparten el mismo camino de bondad produce más bien. Lo malo es expulsado y rechazado a favor de lo que produce un resultado feliz. Nos convertimos en receptores del Amor de Dios y productores de él simultáneamente. Envuelto en la bondad produce más bondad, mientras que lo malo es expulsado, hasta que todo lo que queda es el Amor de Dios como una fuerza guía en nuestras vidas.
