The LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying:
Ask for a sign from the LORD, your God;

Listen, O house of David!
Is it not enough for you to weary people,
must you also weary my God?
Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign:

Reading 2 Rom 1:1-7

Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus,
called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God,
which he promised previously through his prophets in the holy Scriptures,
the gospel about his Son, descended from David according to the flesh,
but established as Son of God in power
according to the Spirit of holiness
through resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Through him we have received the grace of apostleship,
to bring about the obedience of faith,
for the sake of his name, among all the Gentiles,
among whom are you also, who are called to belong to Jesus Christ;
to all the beloved of God in Rome, called to be holy.

Gospel Mt 1:18-24

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about.
When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph,
but before they lived together,
she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.
Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man,
yet unwilling to expose her to shame,
decided to divorce her quietly.
Such was his intention when, behold,
the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
"Joseph, son of David,
do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.
For it is through the Holy Spirit
that this child has been conceived in her.
She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins."
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel,
which means "God is with us."
When Joseph awoke,
he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him
and took his wife into his home.

MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS,

“The virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel.”

The Word becoming flesh and entering the world was an event that didn’t have to happen but it was something that God wanted to happen. It is part of our very nature, stained by Original Sin, to turn away from God and pursue our own goals instead of what God wants. We can be selfish, prideful, and rebellious in relation to God and there are times when He is completely forgotten because of our focus on the physical world instead of what is spiritual. Jesus Christ coming into this world fully human and fully divine brought everything that came before since the creation of the universe to a climatic epoch where Jesus Christ is fully revealed along with God’s plan for our salvation. This event also defines our relationship with God because it shows how much God loves us that He would give His only son in sacrifice for our salvation. It removes all doubt regarding how much God loves us and what He wants from us in return: to be joyful and to love Him. Through this shared love the perfection of God can be realized and celebrated.

A relationship with God can put us at odds with the expectations and encouragements of a society which has slowly drifted away from God. We may find ourselves doing things differently than other people and for different reasons which may draw the ire of those same individuals. Being a Christian is not easy. It is not supposed to be. There is a great value living a Christian life because it is the way that God intended us to live. It is a part of us that, even though it may have been ignored for large amounts of time, provides the key to a truly joyous and satisfying life because God created us to be that way. To do the will of God means we are reacting to the love He has for us and are spreading that love through His creation. Everything touched by it also reacts to it and is made better as a result. Wherever there is pain, crisis, or confusion there is a lack of God’s love. Bringing His love to all things we interact with repairs these defections and makes them perfect. The presence of God’s love is enough to right all wrongs and make things better. The purpose of all things in God’s creation is to love Him and glorify Him. When we start doing the same then we become the perfect piece to complete the masterpiece of His creation.

Joseph serves as an example to us of doing things differently according to what God wants. Discovering that Mary was with child, Joseph planned to divorce her quietly. God revealed to Joseph His Divine Plan whereupon Joseph took Mary as His wife and brought her into his home; raising Jesus as his own child. Joseph chose God’s way above that of the expectations of society. This caused scandal within Joseph’s community and even led him to make the decision to settle his new family in Bethlehem instead of returning to Nazareth.  These things he confronted as he was challenged by them and his faith remained strong. Joseph led his new family from one situation to another guided by his faith and his love for God. Imagine being a man at the age of 15 with a wife and a child whose origins you were suspicious of. Guided by your faith and a message contained in a dream you find yourself marrying a woman you suspect as being unfaithful, settling in a strange town far away from your family, and then exiled for 12 years in Egypt fleeing from mass murder and people who wanted you dead because of this strange child that is not yours. It is in circumstances such as these that the love of God is realized. It is seen in the imperfect not the perfect.

We all are Joseph and Mary when we find ourselves at odds with the social norms of our times. Broken and beautiful we are healed through the presence of God in our lives and because of the salvation offered through Jesus Christ. We cannot do this ourselves. No one can. We need God’s help so that we can receive again what was offered to us previously and we refused. Once we receive it then we can experience all things through the Light of Christ and the Love of God; just as God intended in the first place.

Rom 1, 1-7

Yo, Pablo, siervo de Cristo Jesús, he sido llamado por Dios para ser apóstol y elegido por él para proclamar su Evangelio. Ese Evangelio, que, anunciado de antemano por los profetas en las Sagradas Escrituras, se refiere a su Hijo, Jesucristo, nuestro Señor, que nació, en cuanto a su condición de hombre, del linaje de David, y en cuanto a su condición de espíritu santificador, se manifestó con todo su poder como Hijo de Dios, a partir de su resurrección de entre los muertos.

Por medio de Jesucristo, Dios me concedió la gracia del apostolado, a fin de llevar a los pueblos paganos a la aceptación de la fe, para gloria de su nombre. Entre ellos, también se cuentan ustedes, llamados a pertenecer a Cristo Jesús.

A todos ustedes, los que viven en Roma, a quienes Dios ama y ha llamado a formar parte de su pueblo santo, les deseo la gracia y la paz de Dios, nuestro Padre, y de Jesucristo, el Señor.

Mt 1, 18-24

Cristo vino al mundo de la siguiente manera: Estando María, su madre, desposada con José, y antes de que vivieran juntos, sucedió que ella, por obra del Espíritu Santo, estaba esperando un hijo. José, su esposo, que era hombre justo, no queriendo ponerla en evidencia, pensó dejarla en secreto.

Mientras pensaba en estas cosas, un ángel del Señor le dijo en sueños: "José, hijo de David, no dudes en recibir en tu casa a María, tu esposa, porque ella ha concebido por obra del Espíritu Santo. Dará a luz un hijo y tú le pondrás el nombre de Jesús, porque él salvará a su pueblo de sus pecados".

Todo esto sucedió para que se cumpliera lo que había dicho el Señor por boca del profeta Isaías: He aquí que la virgen concebirá y dará a luz un hijo, a quien pondrán el nombre de Emmanuel, que quiere decir Dios-con-nosotros.

Cuando José despertó de aquel sueño, hizo lo que le había mandado el ángel del Señor y recibió a su esposa.

MIS HERMANOS Y HERMANAS,

"La virgen concebirá, y dará a luz un hijo, y lo llamará Emmanuel".

La Palabra que se hizo carne y entró al mundo fue un evento que no tenía que suceder, pero era algo que Dios quería que sucediera. Es parte de nuestra naturaleza, manchada por el pecado original, alejarnos de Dios y perseguir nuestras propias metas en lugar de lo que Dios quiere. Podemos ser egoístas, orgullosos y rebeldes en relación con Dios y hay momentos en que Él está completamente olvidado debido a nuestro enfoque en el mundo físico en lugar de lo espiritual. Jesucristo, que vino a este mundo completamente humano y completamente divino, trajo todo lo que había antes desde la creación del universo a una época climática donde Jesucristo se revela completamente junto con el plan de Dios para nuestra salvación. Este evento también define nuestra relación con Dios porque muestra cuánto Dios nos ama que daría a su único hijo en sacrificio por nuestra salvación. Elimina toda duda con respecto a cuánto Dios nos ama y lo que Él quiere de nosotros a cambio: estar alegre y amarlo. A través de este amor compartido, la perfección de Dios puede realizarse y celebrarse.

Una relación con Dios puede ponernos en desacuerdo con las expectativas y los estímulos de una sociedad que se ha alejado lentamente de Dios. Podemos encontrarnos haciendo cosas de manera diferente a otras personas y por diferentes razones que pueden provocar la ira de esas mismas personas. Ser cristiano no es fácil. No se supone que sea. Vivir una vida cristiana tiene un gran valor porque es la forma en que Dios pretendió que vivamos. Es una parte de nosotros que, a pesar de que puede haber sido ignorado por mucho tiempo, proporciona la clave para una vida verdaderamente alegre y satisfactoria porque Dios nos creó para ser así. Hacer la voluntad de Dios significa que estamos reaccionando al amor que Él tiene por nosotros y estamos difundiendo ese amor a través de Su creación. Todo lo que toca también reacciona y se mejora como resultado. Donde hay dolor, crisis o confusión hay una falta de amor de Dios. Llevar su amor a todas las cosas con las que interactuamos repara estas deserciones y las hace perfectas. La presencia del amor de Dios es suficiente para corregir todos los errores y mejorar las cosas. El propósito de todas las cosas en la creación de Dios es amarlo y glorificarlo. Cuando comenzamos a hacer lo mismo, nos convertimos en la pieza perfecta para completar la obra maestra de su creación.

José nos sirve de ejemplo para hacer las cosas de manera diferente de acuerdo con lo que Dios quiere. Al descubrir que Mary estaba embarazada, Joseph planeó divorciarse de ella en silencio. Dios le reveló a José su plan divino, después de lo cual José tomó a María como su esposa y la llevó a su casa; criando a Jesús como su propio hijo. José eligió el camino de Dios por encima de las expectativas de la sociedad. Esto causó un escándalo dentro de la comunidad de Joseph e incluso lo llevó a tomar la decisión de establecer su nueva familia en Belén en lugar de regresar a Nazaret. Él enfrentó estas cosas cuando fue desafiado por ellos y su fe se mantuvo fuerte. Joseph guió a su nueva familia de una situación a otra, guiado por su fe y su amor por Dios. Imagine ser un hombre a la edad de 15 años con una esposa y un hijo cuyos orígenes sospechaba. Guiado por su fe y un mensaje contenido en un sueño, se encuentra casándose con una mujer que sospecha que es infiel, instalándose en un pueblo extraño lejos de su familia, y luego exiliado durante 12 años en Egipto huyendo de asesinatos en masa y personas que querían estás muerto por este extraño niño que no es tuyo. Es en circunstancias como estas que se realiza el amor de Dios. Se ve en lo imperfecto, no en lo perfecto.

Todos somos José y María cuando nos encontramos en desacuerdo con las normas sociales de nuestro tiempo. Quebrados y hermosos somos sanados por la presencia de Dios en nuestras vidas y por la salvación ofrecida por Jesucristo. No podemos hacer esto nosotros mismos. Nadie puede. Necesitamos la ayuda de Dios para que podamos recibir nuevamente lo que se nos ofreció anteriormente y lo rechazamos. Una vez que lo recibimos, podemos experimentar todas las cosas a través de la Luz de Cristo y el Amor de Dios; tal como Dios pretendió en primer lugar.

Gospel Mt 11:2-11

When John the Baptist heard in prison of the works of the Christ,
he sent his disciples to Jesus with this question,
"Are you the one who is to come,
or should we look for another?"
Jesus said to them in reply,
"Go and tell John what you hear and see:
the blind regain their sight,
the lame walk,
lepers are cleansed,
the deaf hear,
the dead are raised,
and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them.
And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me."

As they were going off,
Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John,
"What did you go out to the desert to see?
A reed swayed by the wind?
Then what did you go out to see?
Someone dressed in fine clothing?
Those who wear fine clothing are in royal palaces.
Then why did you go out?  To see a prophet?
Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
This is the one about whom it is written:
Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you;
he will prepare your way before you.
Amen, I say to you,
among those born of women
there has been none greater than John the Baptist;
yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he."

MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS,

We have the capability to experience true joy and true love in our lives if only we are open to a relationship with Jesus Christ. We are the ones who can either shut the door, thus keeping Jesus Christ out, or we can open the door wide to welcome Him in. He is constantly knocking at the door waiting for us to respond to His presence. He never ceases from knocking and is persistent in this way because of His love for us and His desire for us to live our lives in the way that God intended us to live it instead of the way that we decided to live it. God knows better. Jesus knows better. We do not know more than God or Jesus and acting that way in the past have only led us into a state of confusion and disappointment. Jesus Christ is offering a different way and we as Christians are encouraged to accept this way by listening to Him and following His instructions. These instructions are rooted in His love for us and are intended to bring us into a healthier state of being physically, mentally, and spiritually.

God makes everything better because we are a part of Him and He is a part of us. To separate ourselves from Him means to become defective and dysfunctional in all of our thoughts and actions. To live a life separate from the one who created us automatically puts us at a disadvantage and unable to live our lives to its greatest potential. God and a loving relationship with Him is the key to joy and satisfaction. Through Him a vision of perfection can be seen and a clear path to contentment. It can be argued that whatever disappointments we have encountered in our lives has been a direct result of a separation from God; an exercising of our own selfish desires above that which God wants for us. As a result of these failures we have become wounded and damaged. We bear many scars from many battles that we have initiated and even welcomed through our own thoughts and actions. We are promised that these battles will come to an end and a wonderful peace will settle upon us by no longer resisting an acceptance of God.

The world is dysfunctional but that is not the fault of God. All of us, through our exercising of our free will without the input of God, have become a cause for this but not without hope. It is through us accepting Jesus Christ as our savior, surrendering our will over to God, and letting God love us that the healing process then begins. A better way to live our lives is available and it is revealed through the process of knowing and accepting God through a relationship with Jesus Christ. Many of us have experienced crisis in our lives. It can be argued that almost all of us at one time or another was challenged by things that we went through. That kind of suffering can be viewed as a shared experience because we all can relate to it. As Christians, just as we shared in our sufferings, we can share in the healing process that a relationship with Jesus Christ can bring. Sacred Scripture gives us examples of suffering followed by joy through the presence of God. This has happened in the past and is promised for in the future followed by an eternity of joy with God. Without God there is imperfection while with God there is perfection. When placed in terms such as these the right choice that we should make appears to be all the more obvious.

The Season of Advent teaches us that through Hope in the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ a spiritual peace will be made available to us that will lead to inexplicable joy.  The type of relationship that we have with Him makes all of the difference. To spend time on this relationship to make it stronger and to make it grow is not wasted time but an investment in a wonderful future that will lead to an amazing eternity with the one who created us. The more we concentrate on Jesus Christ then the more we will get to know Him and the closer we will come to God. Coming closer to God and the ultimate good that He is means we will be affected by His presence more than we could ever imagine. The influences of God cannot be overstated and the benefits that we can receive cannot be described by mere words. It is an experience with the eternal that we were meant to have and can have if we only allow ourselves to do so.

"Regocíjate, yermo sediento.
Que se alegre el desierto y se cubra de flores,
que florezca como un campo de lirios,
que se alegre y dé gritos de júbilo,
porque le será dada la gloria del Líbano,
el esplendor del Carmelo y del Sarón.

Ellos verán la gloria del Señor,
el esplendor de nuestro Dios.
Fortalezcan las manos cansadas,
afiancen las rodillas vacilantes.
Digan a los de corazón apocado:
'¡Ánimo! No teman.
He aquí que su Dios,

Sant 5, 7-10

Hermanos: Sean pacientes hasta la venida del Señor. Vean cómo el labrador, con la esperanza de los frutos preciosos de la tierra, aguarda pacientemente las lluvias tempraneras y las tardías. Aguarden también ustedes con paciencia y mantengan firme el ánimo, porque la venida del Señor está cerca.

No murmuren, hermanos, los unos de los otros, para que el día del juicio no sean condenados. Miren que el juez ya está a la puerta. Tomen como ejemplo de paciencia en el sufrimiento a los profetas, los cuales hablaron en nombre del Señor.

Mt 11, 2-11

En aquel tiempo, Juan se encontraba en la cárcel, y habiendo oído hablar de las obras de Cristo, le mandó preguntar por medio de dos discípulos: "¿Eres tú el que ha de venir o tenemos que esperar a otro?"

Jesús les respondió: "Vayan a contar a Juan lo que están viendo y oyendo: los ciegos ven, los cojos andan, los leprosos quedan limpios de la lepra, los sordos oyen, los muertos resucitan y a los pobres se les anuncia el Evangelio. Dichoso aquel que no se sienta defraudado por mí".

Cuando se fueron los discípulos, Jesús se puso a hablar a la gente acerca de Juan: "¿Qué fueron ustedes a ver en el desierto? ¿Una caña sacudida por el viento? No. Pues entonces, ¿qué fueron a ver? ¿A un hombre lujosamente vestido? No, ya que los que visten con lujo habitan en los palacios. ¿A qué fueron, pues? ¿A ver a un profeta? Sí, yo se lo aseguro; y a uno que es todavía más que profeta. Porque de él está escrito: He aquí que yo envío a mi mensajero para que vaya delante de ti y te prepare el camino. Yo les aseguro que no ha surgido entre los hijos de una mujer ninguno más grande que Juan el Bautista. Sin embargo, el más pequeño en el Reino de los cielos, es todavía más grande que él".

MIS HERMANOS Y HERMANAS,

Tenemos la capacidad de experimentar la verdadera alegría y el verdadero amor en nuestras vidas si solo estamos abiertos a una relación con Jesucristo. Nosotros somos los que podemos cerrar la puerta, evitando así a Jesucristo, o podemos abrir la puerta para darle la bienvenida. Él está constantemente tocando a la puerta esperando que respondamos a Su presencia. Él nunca deja de tocar y es persistente de esta manera debido a su amor por nosotros y su deseo de que vivamos nuestras vidas de la manera en que Dios quiso que lo viviéramos en lugar de la forma en que decidimos vivirlo. Dios lo sabe mejor. Jesús lo sabe mejor. No sabemos más que Dios o Jesús y actuar de esa manera en el pasado solo nos ha llevado a un estado de confusión y decepción. Jesucristo está ofreciendo una manera diferente y nosotros, como cristianos, somos alentados a aceptar de esta manera escuchándolo y siguiendo sus instrucciones. Estas instrucciones están arraigadas en su amor por nosotros y tienen la intención de llevarnos a un estado más saludable de ser física, mental y espiritual.

Dios mejora todo porque somos parte de Él y Él es parte de nosotros. Separarnos de Él significa volvernos defectuosos y disfuncionales en todos nuestros pensamientos y acciones. Vivir una vida separada de la que nos creó automáticamente nos pone en desventaja e incapaces de vivir nuestras vidas a su máximo potencial. Dios y una relación amorosa con Él es la clave del gozo y la satisfacción. A través de Él se puede ver una visión de perfección y un camino claro hacia la satisfacción. Se puede argumentar que cualquier desilusión que hayamos encontrado en nuestras vidas ha sido un resultado directo de una separación de Dios; un ejercicio de nuestros propios deseos egoístas por encima de lo que Dios quiere para nosotros. Como resultado de estos fracasos, nos hemos herido y dañado. Llevamos muchas cicatrices de muchas batallas que hemos iniciado e incluso bienvenido a través de nuestros propios pensamientos y acciones. Se nos promete que estas batallas llegarán a su fin y que una paz maravillosa se establecerá sobre nosotros al no resistir más la aceptación de Dios.

El mundo es disfuncional, pero eso no es culpa de Dios. Todos nosotros, a través del ejercicio de nuestro libre albedrío sin el aporte de Dios, nos hemos convertido en una causa para esto, pero no sin esperanza. Es a través de nosotros aceptando a Jesucristo como nuestro salvador, entregando nuestra voluntad a Dios y dejando que Dios nos ame, entonces comienza el proceso de curación. Existe una mejor manera de vivir nuestras vidas y se revela a través del proceso de conocer y aceptar a Dios a través de una relación con Jesucristo. Muchos de nosotros hemos experimentado crisis en nuestras vidas. Se puede argumentar que casi todos nosotros en un momento u otro fuimos desafiados por cosas por las que pasamos. Ese tipo de sufrimiento puede verse como una experiencia compartida porque todos podemos relacionarnos con él. Como cristianos, así como compartimos nuestros sufrimientos, podemos compartir el proceso de curación que puede traer una relación con Jesucristo. La Sagrada Escritura nos da ejemplos de sufrimiento seguido de alegría a través de la presencia de Dios. Esto ha sucedido en el pasado y se promete en el futuro, seguido de una eternidad de alegría con Dios. Sin Dios hay imperfección, mientras que con Dios hay perfección. Cuando se coloca en términos como estos, la elección correcta que debemos hacer parece ser aún más obvia.

La Temporada de Adviento nos enseña que a través de la Esperanza en la venida de nuestro Salvador Jesucristo, se nos proporcionará una paz espiritual que nos conducirá a una alegría inexplicable. El tipo de relación que tenemos con Él hace toda la diferencia. Pasar tiempo en esta relación para fortalecerla y hacerla crecer no es una pérdida de tiempo, sino una inversión en un futuro maravilloso que conducirá a una eternidad increíble con quien nos creó. Cuanto más nos concentremos en Jesucristo, más lo conoceremos y más nos acercaremos a Dios. Acercarse a Dios y al bien supremo que es significa que su presencia nos afectará más de lo que podríamos imaginar. Las influencias de Dios no se pueden exagerar y los beneficios que podemos recibir no se pueden describir con simples palabras. Es una experiencia con lo eterno que estábamos destinados a tener y que podemos tener si solo nos permitimos hacerlo.
